things are always going to be back and forth. obviously players will try and get more than they are worth, they have the right to negotiate as do anyone. but just because we pay him slightly over now, doesnt mean we pay him over forever. he does not automatically get a pay rise when his contract comes up. if no one wants to pay him more he isnt worth more. his market value in 4 years is not related to how much he is payed next year. that being said, i dont want to pay him heaps and treat him like a god. but we may as well use some of our free money to attract a couple of players to the club.
-
what is the salary cap $8 mil? 44 players on the list? 6 of them on about $50K as draftees each years, a couple of rookies on less... so average is going to be a litle over 200K... BUT if paying a little extra means we plug a gap on our list for 10 years, then is it worth it? any home grown ruckman is 3-4 years behind warnock and still not a guarantee... and considering we are currently paying under the cap and will be losing a number of players on the upper side of things, mixed in with the fact that we have to pay a minimum, well someone has to get the money. we may as well use it to poach a couple of players... if we could manage to trade for a young midfielder with good disposal who would be a starting 18 player for us (without using our first pick, or preferably our first 2 picks) then we could be in serious business in 2010..

if we are sure he will take over as our number 1 ruckman next year, then i am happy to pay him that much. he has done his maturing at freo and is ready to step up and be a number 1 ruckman. if he is going to play for 10 years it is worth paying that much to ensure we get him. i am more worried about what we give up to get him. i want number 1 in the PSD so that we can either take him for free or trade rubbish for him. that PSD is worth more than the priority pick. its probably worth more than the differece between picks 1 and 3 in the national draft too. if there are two good players available for PSD we can trade for one (read blackmail) and pick up the other. getting warnock from freo just as he is ready to step into a number 1 ruck role sounds like something we did 10 years ago...

you are kidding? 5 minutes? Why bother?

why not just have plain red jumper with the blue mfc logo and blue numbers? why bother with the silver at all?

look i know he couldnt tie neita's bootlaces, however, i think the point is valid. everyone keeps saying 'newton doesnt tackle enough'. 'newton doesnt take enough marks' 'newton doesnt kick enough goals' etc. but in reality given the position he is playing he is doing reasonably well, especially for a 14 gamer. he needs to learn. he needs to improve a lot. he has a lot of things to work on. but he has shown, to me anyway, that in a team devoid of tall forwards, he is capable of kicking a goal or too. and for me thats enough to persist with.
-
PJ gets a chance to shine as a tall forward on his own. lets see if he is up to it. NJ needed a rest. let him play two weeks at. one week to realise that he is above the vfl level and can run around so much easier. the second week to consolidate his work on his disposal. he will then get another week or two at afl to see if he can have improved disposal at afl level.
-
yes 14 games. he is in his second year of afl, but has been on the list for 4 i believe. he has kicked 20 goals in his 14 games, average 4 marks, 10 possessions and 1.5 tackles. if you dont think those stats are pretty reasonable for a 21 year with 14 games to his name and a lot of development to do, then go to footywire.com and compare his career stats to the career stats of david neitz... yes he needs to work a bit more. he needs to make sure he holds all those marks. but i think people have been very harsh on a young player who is still learning the game. give him time. i think he will prove his worth, but given the position he plays, his body size etc, he deserves another year or two on the list imo

when we next look like having a good year, we should ust claim it as our 200 year anniversary. it doesnt matter if its not really, as long as someone is celebrating an anniversary that year we can hi-jack it and claim it for our own...

keep davey. wait until the GC team come in and want tobuy experienced players, and 'cult players' and trade him for a very early 1st round and a 2nd round pick together. they will need to buy experienced players for their list, we will get well above the odds for him because he is rated outside of melbourne and GC will have picks to throw around...

unfortunately, the fact that demonology takes everyones votes, can mean that in particular games, the emotional response from the site can be greater thus getting certain players more points. did you play well in the win? does that mean you got votes from 10 people instead of 5? i would have liked to see the old style leader board, and the new style board with weighting, and compare to see if the weighting has effected anyones chances. probably not this year, but perhaps in a year with a 50/50 win/loss ratio it might...

i'll testify to that. i dont think he is necessarily strong in the air, but he doesnt shirk the contest.
-
soft reports, both of them. he should not have even got a reprimand. the thing that pisses me off the most is how mclaren 'sheppards' dunn from the north players. he walked in front on purpose. what possible reason could he have had for standing there?
-
have you called the club and asked where you can see them? have you called and told them of how you feel about this and ask them if you and your family can get in there for a look?
-
the issue there is that tarv would have never helped us get to a flag, the young kid we got with the pick might. sylvia and bate, if they continue to improve could be part of that tilt. and tbh whenever i have watched brisbane play this season i have been particularly underwhelmed with TJ. even when we had TJ in the side, we didnt do it consistantly enough. watch black, he is far better at it than TJ. we need mclean and moloney back from injury and need to add another top midifelder on top of that. suddenly either jones or moloney are fighting for a spot, but also suddenly these players are not under the pressure from the tags.
-
i am beginning to believe that the problem isnt a lack of a key forward, that the problem is poor delivery to the forwards. lots of players can mark and kick goals. but we rarely kick it to the advantage of said players when delivering from the midfield. how many times this year have you seen the ball kicked out in front of a leading forward? how many times have you seen it kicked to the advantageous side of a one on one marking contest? not many i dont think. watch brisbane play. they might not be the best side, but brown and bradshaw get great service.

it was funny the first time. now you look silly.

im not sure where you got the 11.4 from. i took the 9 hitouts from the article that was posted and that i was replying too. but the ball park stands. even if he hits 20% to advatange or whatever it is, its only 2 per game. nothing amazing. he isnt a ruckman at the moment. he is a big oversized midfielder wit a lovely kick. he needs to get more ball, and he needs to have a more focused role ie kick goals or win the ruck. that being said, i rate him and think he will turn out ok.
-
i would rather keep him for leadership and try and get a good pick out of bruce. if we lost them both we would be very light on for players over 25...
-
yet you dont have any time for newton who has played 14 games and kicked 20.12? why should sylvia get yet another role of the dice? he is averaging 10 disposals, 4 marks and 1.5 tackles in his 14 games. just for comparrison. one club legend, D Neitz, averaged 11 disposals, 5 marks and .9 tackles over his 306 game career. In no season did he average more than 1.1 tackles per game. Im not sure what people expect from a full forward? i expect him to kick a couple of goals.
-
my point is he may never be in our top 10 players, but he is a medium back who generally nullifies his opponent. he will be a handy depth player to have on the list, will probably be in our best 25 for most of his career, but will be in and out of the side depending on the form of both himself and others. when we are playing good football his deficiencies will be covered, but as a depth player he is reasonable and will hold his own. trade him for a 3rd rounder and get another player of similar quality who is 5 years behind? bell is what, 23? unless we are going to get pretty good trade for him (ie 1st or second rounder, or a player), he will keep his spot on the list and prob play close to 150 games for the club.
-
im not sure. 5 disposals for 3 goals? not exactly an AA game...
-
unfortunately he only averages 9 hit outs per game. i rate PJ. he is a big man, with a big heart. and IMHO, if I had an mfc player kicking for my life I would be hard pressed to overlook him. unfortunately i'm not sure where his ultimate position is at afl level. he needs to learn to ruck better. and by that i mean he needs to learn to nullify opposition ruckmen in the ruck, and his seond efforts around the ball up need to be better. he needs to create space for the mids. i would also like to see him learn to play as a leading forward but i am not sure he will ever do this effectively for large periods of time. 13 possessions around the ground is better than he has in the past, but given he isnt dominant on the scoreboard or in the ruck he needs to get 20. i love his passing by foot, and his delivery into the 50 is first rate. 3 scoring assists yesterday.

Umpire McLaren - why is he still umpiring?
deanox replied to The Great Pretender's topic in Melbourne Demons
an argument i have made many a time. i play rugby, and while we often get terrible refs, at least most of the time the ref makes terrible decisions all day. at afl level you get three different umpires, so its likely that they never have to adjudicate the same situation with the same players twice. it is a problem, and the afl dont seem to care enough to try and fix it. -
18 disposals, 7 marks, 5 spoils (the second most of anyone in the team)...
