Footy Show... CEO announcement fizzer

This isnt intended as some clandestine effort to have a go at a past player. Let me state that from the get go.

Did anyone else find it a bit strange that very little was made of a new CEO at Melbourne ?? Whilst I wouldnt have expected balloons and dancing girls, given the predisposition on much of the media to already have a size 12 boot raised ready to kick good ol' Melbourne that so little was made of such an important announcement.

Had Eddie been there I could have imagined a more throrough and appropriate news item covering this event. Especially given the Man's ( PM ) status and background.

I must confess that the paltry effort by Lyon dismayed me. There was bugger all enthusiam( bordeing on disdain ) in it , almost a throw-away !!

I ackowledge that the start of season is upon us and a bigger entity than one club , but honestly you would have thought GL might have used his position on show to give it a bit of a Rev up... Is this indicative of the new past-players action group because it might need to liven up just a tad !!

I must confess I dont watch it all that often...and with that degree of balance I probably wont.

....or maybe its just me.. But I thought it worthy of a better treatment !!:unsure:

I agree. Seriously I know Gazza has been getting a bit of unfair criticism but still surely he could have given it more than 2 seconds though

I agree, it was the only reason I watched it, but nothing.

A 10 second pre recorded Hutchison interview with P Mac at least... anything... but no, bugger all.

Considering that the media spent a lot of time and space decrying the MFC for its lack of a CEO, we were entitled to expect something better from them than what The Footy Show gave the club. That's another reason why I rarely watch the programme.

Very disappointing. it's is all good and well for Gary to get stuck into us in the paper saying we are going nowhere, yet he has a perfect chance to give us a massive plug and he gave nothing...

I would have thought as well with all of what is going on at Melb (new coaching pannel, new ceo, 150th season) they (read Gary) might have tried to get Nieta on the Footy Show to pump us up for round one... again nothing.

if you're going to come out and slam us then provide some drive and some solutions Gary. FFS stop sitting on the fence and trying to be Mr in the middle for your tv career, now is when we need the likes of you and David Schwartz who are high profile and in the media to push our barrow. As everyone keeps saying Eddie would...

end rant

glad it wasnt just me.. thought it odd , at best and beligerent at worst!!

Thats it WJ...given the amount of imbalanced attention over recent times.. and all the hooha about a "rudderless" club..in "crisis" etc etc... You /I might be forgiven for thinking that a little more might be given the announcement !!

I was obviously naieve thinkig that GL might have taken the opportunity to give his beloved Dees a boost up !!

Silly Me !! :mellow::o

I think we have to be realistic at the same time, as we are in a very bad way in a number of areas.

- Members

- Revenue streams

- Lack of profits over the last 10 years

- Huge turn over of staff in out football dept over the last 12 months - 2 years. I understand Harris got rid of most of the staff even the staff he brought onboard ended up leaving too.

But it annoyed me the we had an awesome opportunity to plug an appointment that Gary had raised as one of our issues in the paper and he was just disinterested in it.

I agree with all points.

Its like he is ashamed to say he still loves the club that made him who he is today. The way he tries to wait for the other panel people to talk over the top of him when he is about to say his tip and then he just says it real fast and moves on quickly.

We need him to be a voice!

wow, reading the last few day's posts, it would be fair to assune Garry had killed bambi... i think the club's media department might be to blame for not really pushing the issue. Alot of people in here have short memories when it comes to what some people gave to this club as players...

I'm not one for kicking the club unneccessarily but I thought the announcement itself was poorly handled. Twice in a row now major announcements have been preceeded by rival organisations (Mark Williams announced our new coach and Golf Australia our new CEO).

The official announcement should have been with a press conference with tv vision, as they had the day after, which was a day too late, as the news cycle has moved on. Carlton had announced they were doing a 5pm presser re Fevola, so I would have held the announcement until Thursday and then backed it up with a Footy Show exclusive Hutchy/McNamee quick chat that night.

I'm guessing the reason it wasn't done was that Mac wasn't available on Wednesday, but that's even more reason to hold it until Thursday.

It got lost a bit in the ether, would have been a great chance to have massive exposure and give us a lot of positive attention and more run for the 150th celebrations.

The MFC has no control over the Footy Show.. and again.. Its not meant as a Lyon Bash.. but I am ) and not alone it seems ) mystified as to the almost embarassing announcement of a new CEO on this Show.. Garryy heads it up.. May I be forgiven that he might JUMP at the opportunity to participate in something positive about the club ??

I dont think anyone would have accused him of being parochial, if anything probably most glad he could enthuse about something for a change !! Christ...if thats happy Id hate to see morose !!

Not accusing anyone...but Bambi did all but die on that show !!

dont quote me...but I think it was Golf Australia themselves who let the cat out.. well they had news up very early on their site..; before practically everyone. You could read something in that if you were cynical !! ;)

It was put up about 5-10 minutes before the press release came out. Not that early. Someone should have been telling them to hold it anyway.

Fair enough, but I think it is to easy to blame the host for no or little fanfare about the announcement. Perhaps like the majority of us, he is waiting to see how it all unfolds before trumpeting it up.

I am just getting sick of all the Blame being put on one of our favourite sons for stuff that is not really his domain.

Anyway, bring on the footy, bring on a dee's win in rnd 1 and let the start of the 150 year celebration kickstart a new era for the Melbourne FC

GO DEE'S

Its his show...who do I question ...Mr Marmalade ?? huh

its a big announcement ffs.. whats to wait for..it is what it is..Its an announcement !!

the point is THIS IS HIS DOMAIN

You guys have to consider that the shows plan was probably already drafted before the announcement came. An really, they mentioned it and that's all that was needed. I don't think it needed to be blown up.

  • Author

yeah right.. rubbish... that announcement was a long time befoer any lock down for the show might occur.. and you think they wouldn announe anything happenig of merit at THAT time ?? Late breaking etc.. which it wasnt anyway.

More the point.. this is supposedly Garry's beloved Demons.. you cant tell me who couldnt make a thing of it if he had wanted.

Sorry..I dont think he made any real effort. His currency in these matters was ( to me ) seriously undemined.

I would say that of anyone..just happens to be one G Lyon in this instance.

  • Author

to add..even if Garry felt a bit sheepish.. Brayshaw could have rolled it out. Seems like its OK to "beam to the world and beyond" anyhting 'bad' about the Dees.. anything juicy and such...but dont dare you mention anything with an UPSIDE !!

My beef is primarily with the show... but you cant escape who hosts it !!

edit:

I honestly think if Eddy was still running it you WOULD have seen a more enthusiastic delivery and content of this story.

how ironic a magpie would be in all likely hood more upbeat than a Dee !! :o:huh:

I agreed 100% with what Gary wrote in that article.

Also, 95% of the football world couldn't give a [censored] who the new CEO is. How many of the 16 CEO's can most people name... It's not like we got a new President.

Sounds like some people were expecting dancing girls :P

Context:

Given who he is...given his profile and given the amount of crap we endured about not having one.. I thought it rated a bit more effort.

names like Pert, Cook., Swan are all very influential I would suggest

Point taken.

What exactly did you want them to do?

Have a 10 minute segment on the new Melbourne CEO, when they knew nothing other then him being the CEO? I mean, seriously, it's news. It's not a massive announcement. I think you're overblowing it.

There's also a big difference between Lyon and Brayshaw/McGuire. They are President of their respective footy clubs. Garry is not. It's not his job to go pumping us up at every opportunity, whereas its a pretty big part of the reason the other two have got to the position they have for their clubs - their profile in the media.

i suggest you direct your rather ill informed misgivings to the producers of the show. And i might be mistaken, but i thought i saw it announced at a press conference.

As far as garry goes, it seems a case of damned if he does, damned if he doesnt..

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
