Bizzell will play this week

99% likelihood that this is his farewell match, and the same goes for Brown and Ward and Ferguson.

So if you love any of these players, especially Nathan 'heart and soul' Brown, turn up to what will surely be the most pathetic display of football in the history of the AFL.

The only one of those players who has genuinely earned a "farewell" is Brown IMO.

Agreed, although Ward has been around for a very very long time as well (wasn't he a rookie at Fitzroy?).

I think that whether you love these players or not, they have all given us good service because they all try their absolute best, and given we're playing to lose, we may as well play them and given them a farewell defeat

Harsh Nasher.

Are you serious?

Bizzell has never done anything wrong by the club. He has given great service.

It is not his fault the club has treated him like crap this year.

I cannot see that they will delist Brown, not after his form in the last 6 weeks. Yes, he can't kick and all that, but if they were to give a B&F for performance and consistency over just the last 6 weeks he would probably win it. I think its some of the younger, more highly rated players that need to take a good hard look at themselves before they can be assured of playing in the red and blue next year, something it seems some of them take for granted.

How many other clubs wave off the players who are about to be delisted?

How about we hold a ticker tape parade for Luke Williams, Scott Chisholm and Donald Cockatoo-Collins while we're there.

None of those blokes gave the service that Bizzell, Brown and Ward did. Bit of respect please.

I believe he's leaving anyway, i can't see the new coach keeping him next year. I agree though, he does deserve people giving him a farewell, he almost won the B&F and he's always been a true clubman. Ward has been serviceable in his time here and always gives his all, just a shame he can't kick!

I'll be giving the four of them a fond send-off on Sunday from my seat not too far from the bench. Actually, myself and a few of the old ladies around me may have to don the blue and red strip at about 4.50pm the way the injury list is travelling too. We can probably also give Heath Neville a warm welcome and goodbye to AFL football as well. Given that we had three listed players available for Sandy on Saturday and have suffered at least three injuries from the Freo game, it could be all hands on deck.

Both Bizz and Brown are stiff not to be B&F winners.

I thought Bizz was our best in 03 and Brown was a single vote behind White in 04 and very unlucky not to be named AA.

People quickly forget how Bizzel held our backline together for a couple of seasons. Both have been great servants of the MFC deserving a send off.

Ward and Ferguson are another two players who you could never doubt their passion for the red and blue

These are four players i have no problem applauding for their service to the club.

In case you were wondering, Kieran, I wasn't being sarcastic about the sendoff for these four. I appreciate their efforts over a long period of time for the MFC. I think these blokes squeezed every last drop of energy out of themselves for the club, and you can't ask for much more than that from them. I've admired their courage, particularly Brown, Fergie and Bizz.

sorry just poor posting by me. wasn't a direct reply to your post, should have cut out your quote.

i think you make some real good points here. bizzell was great for 'a couple of seasons'. before that he played for geelong, and he has had 2 average seasons since...he has only played with the club for 5 years for 84 games...yes he has played some footy, but not the same favourite son as nathan brown...

ferguson and ward? well a quick web search reveals they are both guitarists (one rock, one flamenco jazz) but they are not the bios i was looking for.

ward has played since 1998, thats 10 years of football for the club, (about 120 games) and i think that deserves a decent send off, his efforts will get him life membership will they not?

ferguson is 26, has never justified a senior spot, and despite having great courage has never played a game for the dees when you would think wow that guy could be something. he hasnt got to 50 games so far in a 5 year career at the club. he just goes. thanks for playing, we appreciate it, but he doesnt need a big send off game...

Brown is old. We're not going to win a flag next year. If we do, Brown won't be a major contributor. There's little point in holding onto him IMHO.

I can see Bizz, Ward and Brown going but i think we will not get rid of Ferguson. There are many other players who we will want to de-list of before ferguson. Such as:

Ward (you mentioned)

Brown (you mentioned)

Bizz (you mentioned)

CJ

Neville

Godfrey

Warnock

Jamar

Miller

I highly doubt that we will de-list more than 7 or 8 players so i think Ferguson will stay another year.

I would have ferg to go before miller.

Holland at 30 and now a dodgy shoulder is in trouble.

Also would surprise if Byron was still around.

I would think CJ will still be on the list or at the least traded.

Why keep Ferguson when...

CJ is in his early 20's and has a lot of room for improvement.

Godfrey has played nearly every game this year.

Warnock is still largely unknown, and contracted.

Jamar is a ruckman, a big one at that. If we don't trade him, he'll stay.

Miller is 24, and has shown as much as Ferguson has in his time at Melbourne. Miller is also stronger, has better leadership qualities, and is great insurance against big defenders (especially if Holland is gone).

At the end of the day, Ferguson has shown all he is ever going to show. He's 26, he has not put on any upper-body muscle in his time at Melbourne, he isn't incredibly quick or creative. All he has going for him is height and unquestionable courage.

Given that he is out of contract, and given that we've been trying to trade him for 2 years, he is an absolute gonner imo.

He also plays like a poor mans Travis Johnstone and always seems to be underachieving.

Agreed, but how long can his dedication and confidence and determination overshadow his poor skills?

fixed

not going on what I've said above, I concur, and don't think he will be at melbourne next year lol...

lol calebrase boy good post and point well made at the end. i think your post goes to show that while there are a whole heap of stuff wrong with many of the players on the list, a number of them have more going for them than ferg atm...

As I understand it, the maximum number we can delist is six players per year (if I am wrong, then sorry)......

Of course there will probably be at least a couple of retirements on top of that.

Personally, I can't see Ferguson on our list next year :( .

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
