Ben Holland and Bizzel are on a low amount. Bizzel is very good.

I agree to get rid of Robbo, White.

Let Yze wind out his career. He found really strong form after coming back. He had one game with 38 possesions.

To get rid of Johnstone or Bruce would be the stupidest things the MFC could ever ever ever do. They would leave and win brownlows.

I admit Johnstone needs a good kick up the butt but you do not get rid of him.

isn't yze on veterans list?

ha, holland on a lot, what would make you think that?

Biz is on about 350K a year I tihnk..

I really don't think he is, pretty certain that was last year.

Johnstone = Brownlow X wrong answer

Bizzell is in the last year of his 3 year contract. $250-350k would be in the ballpark and it certainly wouldn't be less than last year.

Yze is or will be on the veteran's list next year so only half his will count. Probably in the same realms as Bizzell. Bruce, Green, White and Johnstone would be among the top few at the club I would imagine.

Robbo would be on reasonable money but not in the same league as the others. Wonder whether he'll get one or two years more as his contract ends this year...

keep in mind...whether a person is on the veterans or not.. you stil have to pay it... Its only the numerical value as affects the salary cap thats diferenitiated by being listed as veteran.

True, but that will be much more of an issue in 2009. The 2008 veterans are already contracted I think (Yze and Neitz)

I think Cam Bruce will also be a veteran in 2009 so I would expect his new contract is heavily back ended. Something to keep in mind when looking at whether he is a possible trade.

to be on the vets list the player needs to be 30, or turning 30, and have played at the club for 10 years...

he turns 30 on september 30, 2009, that could be seen as after the season, but not sure what the cut off date for the afl is...

he also debuted in 2000, making 2009 only his 10th year. i think 2010 for bruce on the vets list...

edit: out of interest wikipedia lists his dob as 1/10/1979...anyone confirm either dates?

2010 is a long way away. Stop the trade Bruce talk, he's one of the few good ones weve got.

You're probably right although I'm not 100% on the cutoff dates - I thought he was a year further on. Same principle applies though as his new contract expires at the end of 2010.

Bruce Contract Extension

EDIT: Just read the post above. My point is that whether you want to trade him or not, this contract and the probability that it is heavily back-ended would make it quite difficult to trade him for financial reasons. I haven't advocated trading him.

I don't think Neitz would have a problem taking a pay cut, the likes of JT and Green maybe another question. Are we still selling home games next year? I may bring money in but it sucks for the members/supporters.

out of interest given that we re-signed him this season, does that mean we cant trade him? or because the signing was before the season can we trade him now?

just wondering if this rules a trade out or what?

There was talk of a rule banning trades for players until they had served at least one year of a contract after Essendon traded Heffernan who had signed a new contract mid-season but I don't think the rule was ever introduced. I couldn't point to an example though.

For you to even suggest getting rid of Robbo makes me sick!

The bloke bleeds Red 'n Blue and has been with us through thick and thin.... You say getting rid of TJ and Bruce would be stupid?!?!?! Getting rid of Robbo would be just as cruel as buying a kitten, nurturing it to a ripe old age with love and attention, then grabbing it and throwing it in the microwave!!!

The thought makes me seriously ill.....

The Robbo legend deserves to live on! Demon thru and thru....

The Robbo legend deserves to live on! Demon thru and thru....

Its testamony to the fate of this Club that we adulate a taltented but such an inconsistent, selfish and often lazy forward with little or no defensive skills.

Robbo star is slipping and has done so for the past two years. I hope we dont hold onto his carcus too long like we have done with Yze.

If Robbo ever goes meow I'll pay for his first vet trip.

This thread has gone wayward on cutting dollars without looking to enhance the list.

Clint Bizzell, Ben Holland and Yze will all be gone by year end or within 12 months.

Unless we have a better trade deal for Bruce, TJ, White or Robbo we should not cut our noses off......

However White and Robbo have a finite life and we need to consider just on what terms we extend their contracts.

Any extension for Robbo should be viewed carefully IMO.

That is very harsh Rhino, even for you.

Robbo is a small forward, so in terms of consistency, he is right up there with other small forwards. He kicks around 40 goals a year, which is a very good output from someone his size. Injuries have played a massive role in his last 2 seasons, and yet he battles on.

He is now reaching the end of his career, so we cannot expect the same output from him, but he still needs to cut out the sometimes selfish and lazy behaviour. As much as it kills me to say, he needs to reassess what his role in the side is and realise that this is not the Robbo Show.

Cameron Bruce

Travis Johnstone

totally absurd getting rid of the above three, and as others have said, TJ needs to get back to the form of last few years if we're to be a chance next year, robbo needs to build defensively, etc. and Bruce, well he was going to be captain a little while ago.

Don't you hate players that come from another club on big bucks, have a couple of good years, then milk their expensive long-winded contracts at the expense of the footy club? I'm looking at you Bizzel...

No. Robbo is not a small forward. He plays taller than his height and can be a hard mark up for oppositions when he is focussed to play. I can think of a small forward who is more redundant when the ball hits the turf.

Injuries, his selfish play and his lack of defensive intensity condemn him. The game is changing and its finding him out. There is more to AFL than focussing on MOTD and GOTD.

Without statig the bleeding obvious ( but Im gunna..lol ) Id extend this to an extension of ANYONE

Probably the biggest areas of stuffing up I reckon by our beloved club is contracts..we seem to go into panic mode.

And we are still in the sh!t financially because of it. MFC need to grow extra cohunas and just look at the bigger picture come negotiating. No one person is worth the grief, if they want to trade/walk...let them.

He plays taller than he is, but essentially he is a second, sometimes third tall.

Show me a second forward who consistently kicks 40+ goals a year... there aren't many, if any.

I agree with everything you said about his lack of defensive pressure and so on, but he has given us very good service for many years, and we've always been able to rely on him to stand up when it is most needed (a rare quality amongst senior MFC players).

I just hope that he hasn't gone into self preservation mode, like some of his mates, and is therefore playing for himself instead of the side.

He'll get a 2 year contract and finish his career at Melbourne, as he should. And let's not forget that he has never held a gun to our head during contract negotiations, and has taken pay cuts to stay at the club previously.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
