My thought is that Sheedy is such a big personality and recognised as a legend of the game that he could make some hard moves, disturb some 'comfortable' players and really change the culture.

I have disliked Sheedy in the past for being the figurehead for the scum, but now that he is available I am of the feeling that he is the person for us. MHO is that we need more than just a coach. Sheedy best represents the answer to that need. Voss best represents a coach in waiting. If we could get them together over the next 18mths then we could be looking at Voss as Sheedy's long term successor at Melbourne. Voss seems to be going cold on the idea of being a senior coach. He seems to be throwing cold water on the idea every time he speaks about it. If he is an assistant and remains in the media and continues to keep his team in mind. It could well happen at Melbourne in 2010-2011.

His track record is 27 years with Essendon as a coach after 13 years with Richmond as a player. Fair bit of stability there.

Not sure about him as senior coach for the dees but it would be an absolute coup to get him in some capacity.

Seriously if we are interested we need to make a move asap ... before those silly buggers called board members at Essendon wake up and change their minds.

Todays lack of performance encapsulates in two very ordinary hours why this club needs Sheedy. Our list of players finished 10 places higher on the ladder than the Bombers 10 months ago. Today, I saw an Essendon side with a lot less ability than their opponent play with skill and desire and a bit of aggro and win. I then saw a Melbourne side completely bereft of any of the above, meandering through the game and season without intent or direction. Sheeds could turn this around just with his positive attitude. He would build enthusiasm within the place; he would instil the need to be competitive every minute of the game; he would build a club and a culture - he would be the perfect figurehead for "Team Melbourne". He must be signed!

I'd like to think my membership payments ( or that of 28,000 others) might be enough. Or maybe their place on the list next year! Spineless performance are far too easily explained away at this club. Gerard Healy suggested the list would be pruned heavily by the new coach - if self interest is not enough to motivate this lot then there really is no hope.

I've heard that we have the nucleus of a good team?? It was interesting that Glen Jakovich, when asked during commentary on the game, thought that the Carlton job was a better one than ours and that their list was in better shape! That's the ultimate insult. If they were feeling it they'd be having a go- anyone who saw that effort could be nothing but disappointed if they are fair dinkum about the MFC. In my estimation we had 2 players who you would rate as reasonable, in White and Jones, and then young Frawley who I thought was Ok. Why do we need to just write off the rest of the year? Surely we should be putting in place a competitiveness that will hold us in good stead for the future. I am bitterly disappointed and this club has no alternative but to get a winning culture with no tolerance for that type of uncompetitive performance. We can't even use the tanking excuse we will not finish any higher than 14th or lower than 15th. Our draft pick will be 2 (if we lose to Carlton) or 4 no matter whatever else happens. I pay good money to watch a team compete - I will keep following them no matter what, but the players must be held accountable for lamentable efforts like that.

Sure, there are down times in every job, but not one's that last 22 weeks.

Maybe all the players should be put on a performance based contract. Lets see where there hearts lie then. It appears that many play for the $, and not the guernsey, which is really quite sad. Not one players salary should be over $200,000 next year, hell they shouldn't be over $50,000 for the crap that they are continually serving up.

if i was getting paying on average $200,000 - $250,000 a year, i would make sure that i was damn good at my job, so i wouldn't get the axe.

No leadership, poor attitude, terrible body-language, egos that inflate quicker than a hot-air balloon. In fact, we seem to be the biggest bunch of back-slappers in the competition.

We win a few games and suddenly we're invincible. We lose a few games and suddenly we have no confidence.

Yes, confidence is a legitimate issue in footy, but it's also a load of [censored]. You build up your own confidence, just as you make your own luck.

I look at the turn-around of Collingwood, North and especially Geelong, and for some reason, I just can't see us doing the same thing. Not because our list is not good enough to compete with those clubs, it's because I know that after we win 3 or 4 in a row, we'll inevitably fall back into the usual trap of looking too far ahead and fail to perform consistently.

We just haven't got the mental toughness required to be a real threat. If we lost the first few games of the season like Geelong and North did, we'd really struggle to pick ourselves up. And if we lost 4 or 5 games mid-season, like West Coast, we'd be gone too.

I want to believe that a new coach will come in and change that, but it seems like a huge task.

Sheedy was the best Coach/List Manager/ Brand Builder of the 80s and 90s.

Unfiortunately its now 2007, he is past his best, the Bombers know that, thats why he has not been offered a new contract.

I'm not 100% convinced that Sheedy is the coach to go for, but what I do agree with is that he has squeezed every bit out of the Bombers anyone could hope to.

does this not enforce the argument say for someone like Sheeds to come in.

If he and Paul were to nut thigns out with say a 5 year plan.. this would encompass everything that goes towards being a REAL football club these days in the realm of the Football dept.

If Sheeds doesnt kknow how a slick operation runs then there really isnt ever a hope for us.

There would be no miracles overnight. it would take a yer or two to complete the weeding, whilst moulding a very business like tough/winning style team. No room for passengers, none for egos, none for personal agendas etc. Just one purpose.To play hard and win.

Id say to Kev...here mate..yo uhave 5 years, we dont necessarily expect you to want to be there after that. But you can groom your successor all the whiles.

Its not only a team we need to rebuild, its a whole philosohy and mentality as a club. Given its heritage and a respect for the club as an icon this might just appeal to Sheeds. He doesnt need to prove to anyone he can coach, so whats the next level ? Not just a team, build a club !!

G'day 'Jaded', yes, agreed. Our problem @ MFC stems from IMO a club administration that @ least in the past has no football intelligence at all. We're suffering from poor coaching from the last 2 fulltime coaches who recruited badly & developed our young players ineffectually. There is no real hardness @ the club & this is a direct result of the head coaches of our past decade & a half.

Finally around 5 or so years back we finally started to realise thru club psychological profile that we had a list full of introverted personallity types. The club had to get psycologists in to tell them something a really good coach allready knows intuatively. WHY?

An admin' with no football 'smarts'. The Bombers have 3 ex footballers on their board apparently & are one of the best run & Richest Vic based clubs going, for the last few decades.

Fortunately we've recruited OK over the last 5 years, but it was 10 years too late & & it's our 10 year types who ARE NOT doing their bit. Neita is now too old to carry the load on his shoulders & we have an abundance of NON HARD / NON AGRESSIVE TYPES 25 years or above. :-
