‘Goodwin advocated for the same player moves a year earlier’

That’s quite a counter factual parallel universe where Goodwin’s attempts at a new game plan are far more successful in 2025…

very interesting comment in the article that goody had pushed for trading Clarry and Trac after 2024. i didn't know that. Makes you wonder why it didn't happen

PR and optics that the club was imploding. Panic and paralysis set in.

The more interesting question is who recommended against and prevented the trades:

  1. Interim CEO

  2. Interim President

  3. Alan Richardson

I know who I'd put my money on!

You could kind of see he was trying changes.

Bringing in sharp, windor, Lindsey all for speed.

I think he actively tried for change but couldn’t get them to shake old habits.

I think it’s significantly easier when everything from ceo down is changed and new.

That Goodwin was advocating for the Trac and Clarry moves at least as early as 2024 paints a very different picture from the stuck in a rut story 'some people' have been trotting out for a long time.

You don't talk about moving your highest profile players on unless you are seriously aware of limitations to the game plan and the need to transform. As GawnoftheDead noted above, we went all-out drafting speedy, skillful attacking players as far back as 2023.

The picture we can now confidently form is of Goodwin pressing to reform the game style and list but being held back by club politics and the perceived need to retain 'marquee' players.

Is it any wonder Goodwin was getting strained and taut and bringing a mood of stress to the club. Hands tied behind his back and then finally sacked for the consequences of it.

And, hmm, what has happened to all those constant leaks?

  1. The board.

That's who I'd put my money on.

I'm not suggesting Goody behind the Swans change to their game plan to but it's interesting their hyper attacking style and long forward handball (#1 for metres gained by hand) coincides with goody joining them as director of coaching and performance.

That's where the buck stops. Always

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
