For the moment. Longer term he'll need to be able to do more than just play as a tagger.

Not knocking him either, and there's obviously something about being a tagger that really suits the kind of player/person he is.

Oisin Mullin gets about 6 touches a week as a lockdown tagger

I would like higher expectations and growth for Kolt obviously but there is a role for that style of player in teams (and in a really good one like Jeeeelong)

Fritta was mature enough last year to respond the right way to getting dropped. If you're scared that dropping someone once will make them want to leave the club or spit the dummy, they're probably not the guy you want at your club.

If Rivers is made of the right stuff (and i believe he is), I'm sure he too will respond maturely to this call and in many respects it could play a part in helping him become the a-grader most of us think he is going to be.

I suspect the concentrated task and the reduced expectations of doing anything dramatic have helped Tholstrup a lot.

Wouldn't be the first young player to go through a period as a tagger on the way to becoming a more confident and complete player.

We are very much in need of the team-oriented half-forward successor to Nibbler, and Tholstrup has also shown he can be pretty bold and creative when he gets it. I'd hope that is the eventual ambition.

I don't know that there is, which is why many (most?) teams don't regularly use taggers. Sure, you can take an opposition mid out of the game, but good teams will have other players who step up. Not to mention, even tagged players can impact contest around the ball through positioning and the like.

I’d say this is merely part of his development. He’s looked a little apprehensive and fumbly since he first played. He’s doing the role really well and following around the leagues best mids. I suspect the coaches are trying to unlock a bigger role for him either as a mid or a HHF in the guise of ANB as @Little Goffy said.

Good teams don't need to tag but bad teams do have to tag (or they are basically conceding defeat)

It's all very well backing your own players in, but what if they aren't much chop?

It means that a tagger has to be interchanged at the same time as the tag-ee but that's do-able

King might be tempted to tag both Jagga & Walsh tomorrow. After that, what else have the Blues got? (Apart from Cripps)

So who is our 2nd tagger if we go down that path? Sparrow?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
