You’ll hear it at home anyway

Depends who's commentating. If it's Kelli Underwood I won't hear anything. Or Garry Lyon.

(Relax, it's in jest)

That’s coz there’s not a lot of training g going on. The best thing I saw today was lil Tommy Matthews doing cool tricks with a soccer ball. Knee, head, foot, other foot: the ball didn’t hit the ground once.

The best way to do that is to win games of football. I don't imagine we'll gain new members because we added a gimmick.

Surely it's an AFL thing, and still only one team will win each game. I don't want these songs but actually there may will be kids dragged along by parents and bored out of their mind as their crappy team loses nearly every game for four years. Perhaps this music and maybe other draw cards such as Dad buying them a hot jam doughnut after the game will stop these kids giving up before their team rises up the ladder and they permanently become AFL fans and members.

Is it true there’s two sessions today lik it says on the website?

Yeah. The second session begins at 2:45pm. The boys who attended the first session won’t be at the next. Injured players won’t be there. One of the physios told me there’ll be six or eight players, maximum.

This morning, Andy and I went to a gathering at the AAMI centre of some of the MFC sponsors who missed the team photo opportunity a few weeks ago. There were a few players around and the impression I got was that the next full training session was to be at Casey Fields tomorrrow.

The purpose of today's meeting for us was to meet our new Demonland Platinum Sponsorship player, Kalani White who is returning to training after a recent bout of glandular fever and is aware of the need for careful, conservative recuperation. He’s a credit to the family and I think Demon fans will enjoy having him at the club for years to come.

We also met Ricky Mentha Jr, who is enjoying his preseason and hopeful of achieving senior honours this season. He’s another who looks determined to succeed and from what I've seen at the few times I attended training, he's a greatly improved player.

We saw Latrelle, whom JV predicts will play in the upcoming game on Sunday afternoon. Jai Culley also appears ready to go, with the bandage on his arm seemingly shrinking each time I see it.

As mentioned above, AMW is one who looks ready to play, and not only that, he appears physically bigger and stronger than when he suffered his ACL injury over 12 months ago. If he can overcome the initial rustiness of a return from major injury, he is my tip as the big improver of 2026.

To those fretting about the Demons' lack of match play in the lead up to the season (and the ridiculous rule that prevented the club from playing anybody in the Casey game at the weekend), I was informed that the club had a full on training session at Casey before the VFL game vs Box Hill which included match sim and ... there were no injuries to be seen anywhere.

#34 is well over his illness and is feeling great.

i absolutely love that we are having goal songs. it shows more personality on each player imo.

hoping the club posts each goal song before sunday but if not i can trust that ghosty will get each goal song down one by one 🤣

I feel like we’re gonna be talking about Trelly for a long time to come. The boy is special.

I commented on the excitement that’s brewing over the prospect of two Picketts out there and how the more people talk about it the more pressure put on him. I said I suspect he’ll handle the pressure well such is his nature. He said “It won’t be a problem… I’ll take that pressure and turn it into fuel.”

I'm generally in favour but perhaps the frequency of goals (say 16 a game) detracts from the impact. When Brisbane first did it (were they first?) the impact was real and gave them a differentiator. Anything is better than Zoom Zoom and Woof Woof though 😅

For those who suffer from MFCSS, "There's Got to be a Morning After" from the Poseidon Adventure" could be a possibility.

Second training session is underway. Four players only (I guess they’re the ones who like a sleep-in 😁) Roo, Checkers, Riv and Disco.

No soccer balls this time. They’re running short sprints and now handballing practice in a circle, three balls going at the same time.

Checkers is ready for round one. I asked him if he’s 100% and he replied, “Well Ghosty, is anybody ever 100%?” Philosophical, I like it.

I’m the only spectator here (you stood me up, Wallbanger!). There’s only the four players out there but as Rhett (Casey coach) just said, small quantity, loads of quality. And he’s right.

There’s no “If”

It’s already been announced.

And they don't think that could cause hostility???.

@picket fence

Jeffo’s not here today but I asked one of our physios (which is actually better because oftentimes the players aren’t given much detail about their own injury, especially prognoses) and he said that what Jeffo said - ready for round 2 - is correct AT THIS STAGE. He said it depends on what sort of fortnight he has. There are boxes to be ticked.

  • NON-MFC: Round 02

The compromised AFL fixture will get another test this week with the first lot of teams getting a bye after only two matches. Despite this Round 2 starts off with two cracking games as the Hawks host the Swans at the G on Thursday Night and then on Friday Night the Crows host the Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Sunday’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.

Never in doubt!!! In Steven King’s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
