Interesting (if true, which is always an important caveat with the Herald Sun). Not sure they have a lot to work with to trade up. Their finals series was awful, but they didn't fluke the minor premiership, so I'm not sure if clubs will be rubbing their hands together for future picks.

16 + F1 for 8?

Yeah, having said what I said, we might be one of the few clubs who would consider it.

Mainly because I wonder if 7 and 8 are no-man's-land picks in this draft - high enough to make everyone think you should be getting a very good player, but not high enough to gurantee that very good player from a shallow pool. Does 16 give a recruiter more freedom to have a swing at a bit of a smokey, rather than feel obligated to pick a sure thing (who becomes a C grade, 125-game plodder)?

Maybe it's moot when it comes to Jason Taylor, whose selection of Pickett, Jackson, Windsor and Tholstrup suggest he couldn't give a stuff about what others think.

It's also moot if Taylor is confident he can get two beauties at 7 and 8.

If it's not, I don't mind the idea of banking picks for next year before Tassie really messes up the top of the draft. And it is fun to think about Adelaide going full 2023 Fremantle next year.

I’m surprised that with one exception when it was raised almost as an aside nobody has asked the obvious question and that is whether our Aidan is possibly related to Franz Schubert,  the Austrian superstar composer of classical music. Admittedly, Franz has been deceased for almost two centuries, but we shouldn’t ignore the fact that Aidan hails from South Australia which is full of people of Germanic extraction so there might be some connection here. On the other hand, Franz’ bio tells me he was just 156cm tall (5’1”) and that his cause of death was both typhus and syphilis so if there is a genetic connection, he might be ruled out on the grounds of new coach’s no d*ckheads policy. This is going to be a fascinating watch.

We might soon with Max’s age, but Heath & White arriving, wouldn’t think another tall is a necessity.

Similarly we are ok for smalls Picket, Viney, Chandler, Tholstrop, Laurie.

More bigger fast running Mids , to replace Trac and Clarrie seem to be the requirement.

we definitely dont look ok for smalls on the basis that only two of those are smalls (pickett and chandler) and only one of those is stationed i50 at a time essentially

not to mention laurie is 12 months away having the choice of port melbourne or werribee and viney is 32 with a full 14years of afl and a history of shoulders

not to derail the thread or anything but had to be said

Aidan Johnson is more likely related to Brute Bernard.

WJ a most timely post. Paul Callery at 165cm would have towered over him. Richard Wagner distant ancestor of Josh and Corey weighed in at 157.48cm. (sticklers for correct pronunciation will of course defer to the Germanic ‘V’ ). Johann Strauss composed amongst waltz and operetta music the Thunder and Lightning Polka used as an ABC Sport highlights theme. At 170cm he’d be head and shoulders above this pack.

Given the apparent need for small forwards and the wide held belief it’s becoming a game for those with shorter statue. There may be virtue in having a mosquito fleet of this ilk buzzing about the fifty metre arc.

Just looked at the footage from the game above (as opposed to highlights). What an odd player. Everything about him seems odd, unco, awkward. Even his handballs look like pie floaters. His ball drop is unco yet he hits targets. Even his gait looks painful. I don't think he's a Schache type but not sure what he is. Need more footage, I think, to form a rank amateur opinion.

My rank amateur opinion has seen enough to pray that Taylor passes on this bloke. He will need 4 years in the system filling out etc, etc. Haven't we been tortured enough.

I preferred the other medium tall in SA's National side who won everything. Mitch Marsh. I reckon he's got more upside than Schubert.

Schubert 5 years in for 15 games and a touch of promise, then he wants to go home. Oooh yes please.

Someone posted on the rumour thread that Adelaide are keen to trade up for him. I wouldn't be opposed to doing something like this. We'll have 2 death rides next year and will be armed with up to 3 first round picks (+ 2 futures) to trade aggressively or take to the draft.

I cant shake the feeling that Mitch Marsh will be one of those players who always carves us up.

Harsh. He might have caught it from a ‘toilet seat’?

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
