And just like that, we’re Narrm again.

Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters.

Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all!

At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” My belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday.

The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw in Tasmania against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

This is in contrast to Narrm’s shortcomings which were exposed so clearly last week against Hawthorn when, despite holding the advantage in general play for three quarters, it folded like a pack of cards in the end with half a dozen players contributing absolutely nothing to the team effort. And I mean “effort.” The fans are sick and tired of watching opposition defenders intercepting kicks from downfield with consummate ease. Sick of players not chasing or tackling inside forward fifty. The offenders have to be culled and replaced with players who have enough pride in themselves or their jumper to effectively play out their roles in the team.

There is however, no cavalry of top line players to immediately replace them and some untried players will need to stand up along with some of the club’s promising you and the experienced hands like the skipper and Tracc.

It all points to a Brisbane victory. I expect the Lions to run the game out comfortably by 40 points after a close battle until the 27 minute mark of the third quarter, at which time I will be silently chanting these words in my head top myself - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb”.

Not true! I've not gone and checked every game we've played as Narrm, but googling "Narrm wins" literally shows we've won as Narrm as recently as last year (against Euro Yroke in Rd 11, 2024) and earlier before that against the Roos.

Fixed. We have to forgive Mr. Bananabender. He comes from far north Queensland and doesn’t even know that Tasmania is a real place. Sorry Nasher.

I think it's a bit of a myth because we often have a form slump around this time (for instance, in 2022 we lost in Rd 11 after our 10 game winning streak to start the season). An unfortunate coincidence that it happens in the two rounds we are Narrm!

Those were the days what a ride 17 games in a row!

That was the day it all fell apart with Tmac going down for the year.

Yes, I was thinking that too as I typed the previous and found it too dark a thought process for a Thursday morning at work 😂

Turns out today is Thursday... doh

Can’t work out what’s going on with team selection lately.

Is current form no longer taken into consideration?

Lately ???

It's a perennial paradigm of purgatorial persistence.

Dees selection does my head in week in week out.

I've come to believe it's a deliberate ploy designed to confuse. It's working.

I checked the stats at three quarter time and saw Gawns mark count down.

I thought it was low and as usual a barometer for us.

Great winning last quarter for him.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
