I wonder if we will do a small slide for an extra pick? Last year we saw clubs throwing an extra second round pick to move up one spot on draft night.ย

Could we perhaps convince Richmond to do 9 for picks 10 and 24? The incentive for Richmond would be the risk of another team coming for our pick with another offer.

Geelong got a good pick out of Essendon for a small trade back last year, I think that kind of move requires a very high level player at a premium position. Essendon did it for Caddy. I can see Richmond doing it for Harry Armstrong but you need to get to the draft and tease a team with credible offers, itโ€™s a rare scenario.

ย

Can anyone tell me if there is there a limit on rounds in the draft if we have extra available list spots?

Say no one went past the 4th round and the last pick in the draft was say pick 85; could we then use P86 as the fifth round and then P87 as the 6th round, P88 as the 7th round etc?

If Derksen doesn't come which looks likely, I think we'll need to keep one of Tomlinson or Hore.

Tomlinson gets a bit of a bad rap, he's almost never injured, never drops his head at Casey, comes in a plays a role when needed. It seems like he's good for "kulcha".

He'd only get a year and can probably get more elsewhere so we may end up renewing Hore.

I'd keep Tomlinson if he's agreeable for the reasons you've outlined.ย  Additionally I think we should be looking to manage May through the season. Steve won't like being rested but if it's sold to him that we want to extend his career by three years rather than three games then it's a win - win

Tomlinson enables us to take this approach. Although if the Pies sell him on the Nathan Murphy role,ย  he might find that enticing enough to walk.

Indeed, would have to play out on draft night if it all

Lalorโ€™s been linked stronger to Richmond than anyone else so far. Itโ€™s all very Cam Rayner but I reckon he goes top 3. His skill for a powerful beast type is rare.ย

Smith is neither skilled nor fast. Draperโ€™s skills didnโ€™t stand up at SANFL level.

And the more I watch of FOS - who I like more than Smith and Draper - the more I worry about his inside ball winning and his kicking. His overhead marking is just special stuff, but he might end up a hybrid half forward more than a pure midfielder.

Looking forward to arguing about draftees closer to the date in specific threads I'm sure. Mainly because either way we're going to get a great player at pick 5/6.

I've watched a fair bit of both FOS and Smith live. To say Smith is not skilled nor fast is so dismissive. He's quick around stoppages, low center of gravity, drives the legs. Sure he's not Windsor fast across 50m but he can really move. Similarly to Daicos has ability where he gives off and relocates quickly and always on the move. His kicking skills are just OK. He often chooses to handball to release players and get on the move as an option, but I think his kicking will improve.

FOS has it all IMO. I think his contested work probably needs some improvement but he's going to excel to start with as an outside mid/wing where his elite agility, ability to get out of traffic and make good decisions will put him in good stead. He could develop his inside game more as he builds his body.

Hoping that's the case, while p5 and 9 is exciting, were sacrificing our depth by burning so many picks every year

This was the Doggiesโ€™ whinge recently - got JUH and Darcy but they burnt all of their late picks to do so and believed they had issues with depth down the track as a result.

proper 1st world problems though

I think thereโ€™s a few levels of speed between Windsor and Jagga. Agree heโ€™s smart, quick to reposition etc. But not sure heโ€™s got the leg speed weโ€™d love to add to our midfield. His hands are very reliable but not on the level of a Murphy Reid.

He has a little bit of everything. I get the same thing applies for Lalor but I wouldโ€™ve loved to have seems bit more of him playing dominant midfield games.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

The Dogs reigned supreme in 2018 with an inaugural AFLW premiership cup and the Demons matched this feat by winning the cup as the Season 7 2022 champions.Meggs wasnโ€™t born when the Doggies won their first VFL premiership cup against the Demons in 1954. Covid prevented many Demons fans from legally witnessing the victorious 2021 AFL Grand Final cup performance between the Demons and the Bulldogs, but we all grin when remembering those magnificent seven third quarter goals. ย

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturdayโ€™s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFLโ€™s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
