Agree the stand rule is a joke players are not even brought back over the mark now, the ruck rule where two guys maul each other is a joke, umpires calling out who going up in the ruck is a joke, and I would have one more 25 metres kick instead of what we have now.

You mean not even brought back over 'the mark they are setting themselves'!

Stand rule is and always was a complete farce about 4 to 6 months after its introduction.

There's still too much confirmation bias in the umpiring and has been for ages. Media darling, big cub, benefit of the doubt far too often

Gee I wonder why? Perhaps that filters down to them from above, ie different clubs held to different standards by the AFL, different clubs given priority in things like fixturing, payments outside the cap, academy picks etc, different clubs/players held to different standards at the tribunal etc

The game is run in an extremely amateur manner and by that I don't mean the lack of money I mean it's still run like a suburban comp with vested interests playing favourites.

No agree players with the ball sometimes stand 2 - 3 metres from the man on the mark that's a joke.

Rubbish, how many players miss from 30 and lose close games, is that the umpires fault is it, no game will be perfectly umpired and there will be mistakes full stop so what's the answer to umpire a perfect game then and don't tell me video recall we have a unique game people need to stop sulking over it.

You're comparing skill errors to umpiring decisions 😵‍💫

And don't give me this garbage "players make poor decisions too" yes players are competing, umpires are adjudicating - it is a completely different level of pressure.

If i was going to be under public scrutiny for the quality of my work. I would want Top Dollar.
So i believe The AFL Umpires should be paid Top Dollar, and be accountable after the Game

Umpires pay it as they see it, and that will continue no matter how people complain about it.

And all you do is moan about it what is that going to solve.

Supporter dissatisfaction will place pressure on the AFL to fix the issue, especially if it is actually voiced in the media and not shouted down by the AFL mouthpieces like Whateley.

If it doesn't the AFL risks supporter disengagement which will lead to lower attendances and lower viewers which will mean upset sponsors/broadcasters and less money in the AFL's pockets. Maybe that will force them to change to.

Saying "nothing will change, stop whingeing" is such a facile argument. For someone who doesn't care much and tells others to stop whingeing you certainly seem to post enough on here. I think you care a bit more than you're letting on.

So they get up there and say oh yeah I missed that one the games over do you want to punish them for it?

There needs to be different metres awarded for different infractions. That ump knew that was a 50 but he hesitated, knowing it would potentially mean a goal.  And the moment was lost. The stand rule or zoning infraction should be a 25 metre penalty.

The team with the ball would get to keep the ball moving and can play on quick further up the ground but not get a shot on goal from the wing from what is essentially a random decision.

They see blatant indiscretions and don't pay them, how do you account for that? They are far too easily swayed by parochial crowds and umpire different players to different standards (ie the superstar tax which is clear as day). You then also have different umpires interpreting rules differently which then is another cause of inconsistency.

You have rules in the books which are only sometimes paid eg "dissent" rule. Earlier in the year you could argue it cost Freo a game, similar last year in the Blues/GWS game - yet in most other games there is blatant dissent from players that goes unpunished. Why? It is either a rule or it is not, if it is a rule pay it. Otherwise it will get paid 1 time in a thousand at a critical moment and cost a team who will rightly be furious when the other 999 don't get paid.

Time for the AFL to limit interchange to 32-40 a game and that will slow the game down and when fatigue sets in it won't be as quick and easier to umpire.

That won’t happen until right after the point we have a full list rebuild to suit the current game. Then the limited interchanges will come in and the game will change back to stoppage and contest.

I just not a fan of people who like to abuse people who are out there doing a difficult job to their best of their ability and except for a couple have not offered one idea on how to eliminate wrong decisions.

These same people only probably know one thing to say at the football and that's BALL.

As for saying lower attendances that won't happen, if you want to fix the problem stop letting coaches have an input and as I said earlier 10 interchanges a quarter slow the game down would be a start.

Agree...

...and there will always be mistakes made by umpires as they are human after all, and by nature imperfect.

Same goes for the arc.

...and fans will always complain & see things differently, the confirmation bias of my side being the right side.

The rules will always have grey areas, it's the nature of the game.

...but, we should still want continuous improvement from the umpires as well as all parts of the game.

Along your lines of thinking & I agree we shouldn't let it ruin our love & enjoyment of the game.

...although it has nearly cost me the odd TV.

Exactly! There is no big deal about it. But it got a ridiculous amount of attention on the socials. They even launched a debate on affection in the workplace. Ridiculous when the more pressing issues are being ignored.

Kind of a microcosm of society in general 😉

Holding people accountable is not abuse.

Who says lower attendances won't happen? Even if attendances don't drop due to club allegiance viewership most certainly could drop as people become disengaged with neutral games. How many people on here have said they rarely watch games other than Melbourne? And these are diehard supporters that bother posting on a footy forum.

The AFL will cook the goose that laid the golden egg if they are not careful.

Agree but the AFL wanted to make the game quicker coaches now make it a pack mentality, slow the game down would be a start.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
