Bar Rivers entre' into the midfield and the progress of Windsor there hasn't been much to get excited about this season DZ.

70.5 is a big team rating for the Dogs and roughly where we were at in some matches in 2021.  We averaged 67.2 in the H&A season that year and posted a 69.5 in the GF

Daniels, with only 19% game time, pretty much matched the ratings of our two key small forwards in Pickett & Chandler!

Obviously they probably didn't get the service with inside 50s but regardless, we are nowhere near the level both in a form and a work rate sense since Round 9 vs the Blues which was three months ago now.

Like so many other hidden stats they have 'locked away' in their safe.

So annoying and I'm convinced they have a deal with the broadcasters so those of us who like stats will still listen to carp commentary and media shows.

It's one big money making circus now L.

This stuff used to annoy me as well but over the years i've slowly learned to switch off.

Their decision making is mostly driven by that and has been for many decades now.

The same goes for the rule interpretations but that still gets to me as i feel it often changes momentum and the outcome of some games.  Probably for the same reasons above 😅

Yeah no point being triggered by anything they do, I still don't know why so many in the other threads allow themselves to be constantly outraged week after week.

The stats thing doesn't make much sense though. Depending on the price, I would absolutely be open to a paid subscription for premium level statistics. Would there be enough demand for such a product? Not sure, but I would!

Champion's no doubt targeted their business at corporates (broadcasters)  and clubs L.

Obviously the prices they're getting from them are in a diff league to anything you & i could afford.

But they could also possibly tier their packages and give a bit to the punters without giving all of the really core / key stuff away that they'd need to reserve for the corporates.

Unfortunately the punter is left having to listen / watch the 'experts' picking their way through and choosing from the best available stuff.  Some of which involves more $$ being forked out by the punter for shows on fox & Kayo (if they want).

Yeah just something like that where you can access a bit more. It just seems at the moment like there are more useful stats that you just can't access and more useless stats like fantasy or dream team points.

But it is clear how the system works, not a massive deal.

  • Swing: difference between expected margin and actual margin.
  • xScore: total expected score from all shots taken.
  • +/-: total score above or below expected score.
  • xSc. / Shot: average expected score per shot. This represents the average shot difficulty.
  • Shot Rating: average score above or below expected score per shot at goal.

Notes: Expected scores are calculated by Wheelo Ratings. Each shot at goal is assigned an expected score based on the distance from goal, shot angle, and type of shot (e.g. set shot, general play following contested possession, general play following uncontested possession, ground kick, etc) as a proxy for pressure. The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

After last night, Gawn is the fourth highest rated player across the season, behind only Bontempelli, Cripps and Rankine (just).  It's Gawn's best individual rated season since his back to back Bluey years of 18 and 19.  He is 10 places higher than Xerri.  He is a remarkable player.

Where's binman to pull some gems from these stats and let us all know we're doomsdayers but we're precisely on track?!

He's gone missing recently, this is his thread isn't it?!

Remember you said you weren't going to play the man on return, Jimmy?

This is a completely unnecessary post. Things change. Last year you were needlessly neggy when we where a whisker away from a PF twice.

Let's park the attacks and have a bit of constructive analysis.

Apart from getting some kids through the draft, how would you improve the team next year?

'Attack' is a bit strong my old mate, but point taken.

The constant goal post shifting and finding any excuse possible outside of pointing the finger at our list and coaching becomes tiresome though, it's got to be acknowledged.

It's head in the sand kind of stuff!

I made a long post in a thread last week regarding where I think we need to put our energy and attention as a club, I can't remember the thread. Could be the trade targets one?

I take your point, will tone down and target posters less.

I don't always agree with you, but have always liked you as a poster, and most of the time you're constructive.

I also think there's acknowledging factors that put together are not head in the sand, but legitimate for any analysis, but we've been there before, so I'll park it here.

  • xWin %: win probability based on expected scores.

The expected score for Port may be a little higher than others as I include the rushed behinds and Port had five. This may overinflate an expected score as there may also have been a shot at goal in that chain which was already included in the expected score.

AFLxScore on Twitter had the expected scores as 62.2 (+1 rushed) to 76.7 (+0 rushed) and Champion Data had the expected scores as 67 to 80, so not significantly different to 61.6 (+2 rushed) to 78.8 (+5 rushed). The difference between my model and AFLxScore's is basically the rushed behinds which they handle differently to me. I will aim review this in the off season.

Does this explain it, or does it still not seem right?

@WheeloRatings I was about to post:

I'll preface this with an admission maths isn't my strong suit (well if you don't count calculating betting returns) and that perhaps i'm just having a brain fade, but it still doesn't look right.

At the very real risk of embarrassing myself (something i AM good at), looking at the data for Port's overall score, which i get excludes rushed behinds it is 7.6.48, so 13 scoring shots in total.

If Port converted ALL 13 scoring shots into goals that would be 78 points. Yet the expected score is 78.8

I'm glad i didn't because i just realised my error.

They didn't have 13 scoring shots, they had 26!

I assume five of those 26 shots were rushed behinds.

Am i right in sating that means that on 8 occasions they either didn't make the distance (and it wasn't knocked though for a point) or kicked it on the full?

On a night that was still and dry that seems an awful lot of shots at goal that failed to register a score.

I think that we intercept marked a few in the goal square as well?

Yes, that's correct. They had 26 shots in total - up to five of those resulted in a rushed behind and therefore at least eight didn't register a score at all. One was a shot by JHF which was smothered off the boot, so they can also count as a shot if it was deemed to be a genuine shot at goal.

I say "up to five" rushed as a rushed behind may not follow a shot, but I haven't checked to see whether this was the case for any of Port's rushed behinds.

Yes, it does seem like a reasonably high proportion of their shots not registering a score, but I haven't looked into how it compares to other teams across the season.

Round 22, 2024 MCG - Demons vs Power

Our champ having a horror finish to the season.  I don't have the desire to troll through the records but i suspect this is Clarry's worst rated game for the year.

He also finished in the bottom quartile of all player ratings.

Why would you keep pushing a player so out of form to keep on keeping on?  Surely manage him through till the end of the season both in this match just gone and from here on.  Or... let him choose between that and playing a few chilled games at Casey.   If his finger has flared up again and causing more woes then why play him at all?

Max having a super game with his number one 5.82 rating reflecting this.  However, he did produce a much higher rating and his best for the season in Rnd 11 vs the Saints with a massive 7.20

Pretty ordinary result from JVR and it would appear Melky may have hit the wall with the same poor rating as last week.

The team rating was still a fair way off Port's with their top six rated players having a slight edge over ours.  Although a -22% result vs 2023's rating is an improvement on -30% the previous week vs the Dogs.

Salem, Vines, Pickett, ANB & Petty putting their best foot forward.  And finally a substantial contribution from Sparrow.  The stint at Casey appears to have helped his game since returning last week!

Thanks DD, we had a better spread of players this week and for some reason we are almost getting the job done with fewer touches. 😁

Round 23, 2024 PF Stadium - Suns vs Demons

Our second best team rating for the year.

Where did that performance come from?  Only bettered in Rnd 1 vs the Dogs with a 72.4  A mere five months and 22 matches later!

Did it for Nibbler i assume?  Haven't watched the game yet but look at those top six ratings.  The second best result for the year.  A smidgen behind Rnd 11 vs the Saints (29.85)

Speaking of Nibbler that was also his best rated match of the season.

A break out game from Howes?  His best rated game so far for the redlegs.

Marty Hore cracking into the top 6.  Must have been pretty decent?

Kozzy with the lowest rated game for us (not counting Sparrow).  Not so good?

Thanks DD that was some game by the boys no wonder Suns “wilted”, great to see the team up above our ‘23 average and who would have thought that Blake Howes and Marty Hore would feature comfortably in our top 10. A lot to like about our game today.!!

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
