If we could get anyone to the Dees next year who would it be? Judd through the centre is an obvious choice, and i think he is the best player in the comp. i dont need to list his attributes here, but if you add Judd to a midfield of Mclean, (a fit) moloney, TJ et al we are starting get a midfield that rivals the others...

however, mclean and co do alright when they are all fit and on the park but we definitely lack a true CHF. we have a couple of options who dont seem to be the package. would the addition of pavlich to our forward line mean the difference between us being good and premiership material next year?

I went Pavlich, because he is so much more than just a CHF.

He is a forward, a defender (he got an AA selection at CHB) and he can play in the midfield.

His body is also less suspect... no dodgy shoulders.

That's not to say that I'd be upset if Mr. Judd decided he wants to come to the Dees!

umm tough

i voted pav coz we dont have a strong forward and he can play back/mid-field or forward

i no judds 2 years years younger but we've got a great mid field eg. johnno, bruce, mclean, mcdonald and so on

i think pav will make more of a differnce for us regarding a tilt at a premiership...

The emergence of Dunn and Bate as possible CHF, i would still go for Pavlich, even though our odds for the flag are better than our chances of getting him. As stated he is so versatile, plus with Neita on his last legs, it makes more sense.

Ha what am i kidding, we'll get Judd through the PSD, and then we'll trade Freo our first 2 draft picks and 1 Brad Miller to get Pavlich over to the Red and Blue. Yep, start engraving the '08 cup as Melbourne.

The emergence of Dunn and Bate as possible CHF

I don't know that either have actually 'emerged as a possible CHF'.

They were played last weekend as tall running midfielders, who could go back or forward. Mobile 191-192cm 'power' midfielders are what a lot of teams long for ... it's what Fremantle had that killed us in the semi last year. I think Bate and Dunn offer a lot in this regard, especially as their aerobic capacity peaks. I thought Dunn especially looked to have a future in that role rather than as a CHF, his running capacity really impressed me and it's a role we haven't seen him undertake much before.

Judd is a better version of McLean (at least at the moment). I think a Judd-less midfield (McLean, Bruce, Jones, Moloney, Bate, Dunn, Bruce, Green, Bartram etc.) would still hold us in good stead. So I think there's heaps more upside to Pavlich in terms of being a forward improver (including as a Neitz replacement at FF) than Judd as a midfield improver.

Having said that, I'd hate for Judd to end up somewhere like Collingwood or Carlton.

Either is a tantalising prospect. I went for Judd, I think he is simply the best footballer around at the minute and is a proven big match performer- but that's no reflection on Pav, just Freo - but it was very, very tight.

For the Dees? Pavlich. In general? Judd in a heartbeat.

Oh but what about Nick Sautner?

I just couldn't resist!

I'd rather get Ben Holland, Daniel Ward and Simona Godfrey to resign first rather than get either of them at Melbourne! Stupid question.

I would have thought this would be right up your alley Chilli. Both out of contract at the EOY and whispers of both being dissatisfied. I think the thread was alluding to hte possibility that if they did both want to decamp then who would people favour? I'm not sure about the second question though - seems a little redundant to me.

Clearly you have way too much time on your hands.

Surely you could have seen a way to get Hamish McIntosh, Jonathon Brown, Heath Shaw and Chad Cornes into the team for next year as well. Back to the drawing board with you.

My plan is realistic

Who the hell would want McIntosh or Shaw anyway?

And Brown or Cornes are out of the question

......

Its another of your fantasies. Be careful of your keyboard again. ;)

Freemantle and Adelaide would be stupid to do those deals. Its a bigger sell off than a garage sale.

Yesterday you said Freo would asked for "Freo would ask for McLean, Bate and a 1st rounder".

They do the deal on "Cameron Bruce, Chris Johnson and priority pick #19 to the Fremantle Dockers".

What a crock!

Were you handling Freo's negotiations?

Why would Adelaide given up a capable AFL footballer and a 4th round pick for a footballer who is not and a3rd round pick?

What value is Miller to them when they have McGregor and Perrie who are better than Miller?

McIntosh is young and a pretty good ruckman and one of those would be handy give old Whitey is getting a bit long in the tooth. Heath Shaw or Jesse Smith would be an asset good running players & goal kickers from full/half back and good replacements for Ward, Brown, Picket or Whelan (take your pick) are much older than these guys and looking forward both will probably turn out to be much better players overall.

I would take Jonathon Brown over Pavlich and Judd is not worth what we would have to give up for him

FWIW I went with Pavlich....

But that is the real question isn't it, is one player, even Chris Judd, worth it?

Especially considering that we would have to give up half the side to get him <_< !!!

so 7 people said they would prefer someone other than judd or pavlich to come to melbourne? only on the demon bnadwagon metnioned j brown. who were the others?

This is what will happen at seasons end. Demons will finish 14th.

I dont think we will pick up Bock for a 3rd round pick and Miller. Bock is a great player and the crows love him to death. He wont leave under those conditions.

Who do i think should go. well firstly Pavlich and judd are going nowhere so to talk about them being traded is silly.

These are the players out of contract:

lewis

roughead

ryder

dale thomas

pendlebury

krakour

mooney

judd

pavlich

riewoldt

dal santo

nathan brown

coughlan

nick stevens

marc murphy

andrew walker

josh kennedy

kepler bradley

mark johnson

andrew lovett

nathan lovet murray

brent stanton

courtney johns

The players in bold are not going anywhere i dont think

Trade: Bruce + Jamar = B.Stanton (Essendon)

Essendon dont need a CHF like miller. The area of weakness that they will be looking at is ruck and midfield with James Hird retiring. They rely too heavily with Hille and laycock. As for stanton, well i see him as a future wing player who can play both forward and midfield. I really rate the kid a lot

I have been watching kruzer for 3 weeks not. The guy is a monster and is one of the best tap ruckman out there. He has gone forward and kicked crutial goals too but the guy is too talanted to go at # 6 or whatever we get for coming 14th. Richmond need a ruckman and will get him before we can.

i think pav will make more of a differnce for us regarding a tilt at a premiership...

I agree with you, individuals such as Judd are invaluable, but with Brock, Jones, Johnston etc They would love another target up forward as would neitz and robbo and as brillant as Judd is, Pavlich would make us a better Team.

U cant be serious Bruce + Jamar = B.Stanton

No way would I trade Bruce. If Only Daniher had the luxury to leave him in the middle all the time.

I would trade Bruce, if a decent trade was up for grabs in which we benefit. Sure, he gets a lot of possies, but many are ineffective. His disposal has gotten gradually worse and his decision-making even more so. The fact that many were considering him to become next captain hsows how far he has slipped. No way would Bruce IMO be a good choice as captain.

There are only two or three players in our team that can turn a game on its head. Neitz, McLean and to a lesser extent TJ. Hopefully a few of the younger blokes can enhance that number.

So getting back to the start, yes i would trade Bruce for someone that improves our team.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
