Sitting in the cheer squad

Recommended Posts

Back in the 70s I used to go to every game and sit or stand in the cheer squad. Screamed my guts out and lost my voice every week. You would just roll up and join in the fun.

Now I’m old and I have seats in the Legends near the MCC with the upper class.

My teenage boys look enviously at the colour and noise coming from the cheer squad and beg me to sit there.

So at our last home game I made my way down, but all the seats were reserved and we had to sneak some seats about 20 rows behind (which was actually still a lot of fun)

So anyway, my question is… Is there some way to sit in the cheer squad these days if you don’t have a reserved cheer squad seat ?

Can't help you Bbb but You could probably pm Wcw.

I went through a stage where I went with one particular mate as both had 10 year old daughters that loved all the commotion in the cheer squad. They got to wave the old flag and knock out the occasional supporter in front of them.

I did enjoy it myself. Of course you have no idea of what's going on the other end of the ground but it's super exciting when one of our players is running in for goal.

Plus you meet a better class of people as the other mobs riff raff isn't about.

I don't recall reserving seats. Maybe we were hogging some poor person's seats without knowing.

To sit with the cheer squad you and your sons need Demon Army membership, BbB. If you call the Club they will sign you up. The cost is $46 per person annually. Once signed up, you’ll receive a weekly email with details of that week’s match, and you can register your request for tickets in our bay.

Demon Army membership gets you into our bay, but you still need to get yourselves into the ground with your MFC membership, or by purchasing tickets.

The first 10 or so rows are reserved for folks who are involved in volunteering, the first four being for key members, the floggers, banner crew, chant leaders etc. The remaining rows are for all other DA members.

LOL “commotion” 😁 I don’t call our bay M3, I call it the Bay of Carnage. The first three rows are not for the faint of heart. 🤕

First four rows...not!!   (I'm sure WCW will not relate to this lot.  Not enough mayhem ... noise 😄)

The rest (that's me getting up to go to the loo after a few too many frothies (drinking now banned though...dry area which is probably best!).  The alien Hawks supporter won't last in the reserve area and will be marshalled out within minutes)....

It's great fun being part of the 'rest of the DA' as WCW puts it (😝) and you don't have to put up with oppo supporter nuffies and their nonsense but you only get to see half the ground.

My brother and i were part of the CS back in the early 70s.  We sat in the southern stand and there was a secondary group down in the northern stand forward pocket Punt Rd end.  Roughly M4 to M5 now.

Bro and his mates (with younger me in tow) then created their own splinter group for a while hanging banners, waving floggers and throwing streamers, confetti (cut up newspaper) over the 1st level of the Ponsford.  Didn't last long lol.

I didn’t mean to offend any DA members, I’d be the last person to do that. By “the rest of the DA members” I meant as opposed to those of us in the first few rows of M3 (the vid above is probs front row of M2 or M4 and yeah, it’s a monks’ retreat compared to where we are), who’ve earned our seats there based on time and effort devoted to the DA.

We sometimes spot someone in oppo colours who’s snuck in or has been invited in by a DA member who should really know better. They certainly are given their marching orders. ❤️💙

edit: DDynasty, you look NOTHING like I’d expect you to look. And when you need the loo, don’t be standing there crying! The queues are a mile long, and one’s bladder is only reliable to a point. 😁

If you get your membership sorted, this weekend the seats in M3 (after the volunteering rows WCW mentioned) are unreserved!

It's always great fun and everyone's very friendly in the squad 😊

Trudat, DP! How much fun have we had in various *states?!

Our bay fills quickly so members should arrive early enough to get good seats.

*By “states” I mean parts of the country as well as the condition we’re in. 😝

PS: See you in Sydney!!!

I knew what you meant WC.  Just stirring the pot a little 🤭

I'm relating myself to the dude in the jacket behind WCW.  Unless i'm somehow sleep walking out of the house dressing in me mum's gear now and i don't know it!

Thinking the only time i might have a sook would be after witnessing a premiership at the G after the siren.

Truly so excited for the Sydney game and the various states we'll get ourselves into 😂

I've done too much running around recently and not been able to join in the festivities afterwards, so very keen for next Sunday to kick on!  Especially since this time I can't miss my accommodation check in hahaha

Yep bay 17. Still remember the grog squad who sat at the back of the cheer squad.

My son and I are trident members and we sit in the Southern stand. We are also Demon Army members.

1. Its a worthwhile donation, they play an important role on game day.

2. It enhances the interstate experience. There is usually a pre game and you get to sit with like minded fans during the game.

Its very good value for money spent.

So what they say about the MCC is true?

I've only been there twice.

The first time was uninvited with a Mark 'Jacko' Jackson mask on.

The members were horrified and i only managed one pot before being asked to leave.

I did argue that as an MFC player (at the time) surely i was welcome.

That didn't appear to go down to well as they retorted with something to do with me being D&D.

You can sit at the near edge of the GA bays abutting the DA's bays, like we do. Chants and the rest of the good vibe very easy to join in on (though there is the occasional oppo stirrer to contend with!)

Are you taking a 4 pack of frothies to the bathroom DD? 😉

...and there's a little face-the-crowd cheer-leader-in-waiting over in our bay. Kept us going nicely. Sign him up, DA!

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
