My recollection is of him during the breaks in games always walking around and around.

It always seemed wetter in those days, the ground and the players

The use of arms in those days. From what i remember, he used to play in long and short sleeves.

Good memory. Mine also. Ron was constantly in motion on the field, jutting jaw, arms swinging and his loose leg stride. He effectively coached the side on the field with instructions and sometimes no holes barred abuse if he was unhappy with the efforts of others, including the ump.

Far be it for me to question the words of a writer of the quality of Hemingway, but isn't the correct expression "no holds barred"? Or perhaps this is just a typo?

Excuse my ageing brain and arthritic fingers. No holes barred is a Freudian slip.

"Healy off, Ellingworth on". The man was all over it and could spot a down hill skier from 100 yards.

As I mentioned yesterday imo Barassi would be a composite of Petracca and Oliver. Fierce determination, never say die attitude. 'Melbourne through and through' to quote the famed Norm Smith.

I never saw the great man but always envisioned Michael Voss as a modern day (well, back when he was a player) RDB.

Hopefully Voss doesn't find the same success at Carlton that the great man did.

Very early days but there is a chance that I'll be chatting with Adrian Gallagher soon for an interview style project I've been kicking around. There will be plenty of questions regarding Barass as a coach 🙂

Happy 87th RDB Jr! 🎂🎉🍺😊

Not only was he a legendary ruck rover in many an MFC Premiership side, he was also a top quality coach who re-awakened a sleeping giant and brought the first silverware to a struggling small club 🏆🏆🏆🏆

I saw him play often from 1961 until 1964. He was Mister Football, though, in the outer West, where I was brought up, Footscray supporters thought that title belonged to Ted Whitten.

I met him at Acland Cellars in early 2006, before the start of the season. He was buying a bottle to take to Claypots. I couldn't help myself and told him how much I admired him. He paid for his wine, got to the door, turned around and said, Go Dees...

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
