I heard it was a 9.3% drop off.

Gee I was told it was a 3.67% increase in fitness levels.

Yeah I thought we were going to be at 93% peak levels

We could be twice as fit as last year and wouldn’t matter. Basic execution of skills are vital in this game, but more importantly - execution inside 50. The aim of the game is to hammer those goals through the big sticks. We got a former ruck as our forward coach, and we’re selling our hopes on Gawn and/or Grundy being forwards next year when their previous history says otherwise. I don’t understand why anyone would get on the back of Griffith. We’re being outplayed due to a rigid game plan. If we are made look like witches hats in the last quarter it’s because opposing teams take risks and play with flair, and last year that wasn’t the case. Teams have worked us out. I think Griffith is doing a tremendous job. On the injury front we’ve once again been blessed. A result largely attributed to Griffith. Fantastic effort.

Good call.

Watching live all year you could see the game plan issues and the 'down the line' to the pocket continuosly yielded poor results.

St. Kilda was a great example.  Absolutely brilliant play, Saints then change approach at half time and we folded - winning on the back on 2o mintes of sublime football.

Happened week after week in the 10 - 0 period.

Lethargic coaching and lack of deep analysis of on-field issues IMO. Constant re-fresh needed in this caper or your'e behind the pack before you know it. Darcy Moore, Howe, McCartins etc.  would have loved facing the Dees this year.

I think the players were mentally fatigued, not physically. Look at the last 5 minutes of the SF - we were all over Brisbane because the sniff of a victory refreshed the players mentally. They were certainly physically fit enough!!

But it Points to the need to manage players during the year, to keep their mental freshness.

Does anyone have access to the total number of players we used compared to other clubs? Number of debutants (we had one)? Games missed through injury?

I seem to remember these data being mentioned in previous years.
And I acknowledge that there are very different reasons that clubs use more (developing lists, struggling on field) or fewer (settled contenders).

For total number of players used in a season, click here and sort by number of players used (3rd column). West Coast used the most last season with 47; Melbourne the least with 33; AFL average was 38.

For number of debutants, click here (not sure how reliable the data is). West Coast had the most with 10; Melbourne the least with 1.

For games missed through injury, the AFL usually publishes an annual injury report in May of the following year

And does anyone know who the coaches working under Griffith are?

Am I correct in thinking AFL clubs now have a "High Performance Manager" (e.g. the role Griffith is in) and a separate "Strength and Conditioning Coach"?

Interesting. WC had all those problems with Covid and had to bring in players from their top-up list, which skews the figures somewhat (AFL average).

Also interesting that there's a kind of trend for the teams up the top of the ladder to use fewer players, presumably because of having more settled lists. Would be interested to see the Players Used lined up against games lost to injury.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
