i would say the blame rest squarly on the shoulders of the players.

on paper, todays team, if they played to their potential, should have been better then they acted. they should have been competitive!

Calls for ND's head before the season is over are naive in the extreme. One thing Paul Gardner and the board have tried to do, and successfully, is to bring some emotional and financial stability to a club that has a recent history of imploding when things go pear-shape.

ND may well go at season's end. But that will only happen if the Board has done its homework and have identified someone else who could do a better job. There probably is, exactly who I wouldn't know right now, but there won't be a sudden rush of bloodletting by sacking the coach mid-season that will sink the club deeper in the mire.

There is nothing surer than ND coaching the season out.

Collingwood came back from a Perth road trip, had no Buckley, Didak, Ben Johnson, Rusling and Clement........and they sent Tarrant packing at the end of last year.....yet they find a way to win over the Tiges!

Adelaide......no Riciutto, Hentschel, Biglands, McGregor, Johncock,.....still manage to back up from beating the Doggies by rolling the undefeated Power.....not an excuse in sight!

St.Kilda.........Ball, Maguire, Hudgton, Hamill, Riewoldt (until this week)

We are the experts at making excuses for injuries we really are.

In each of those examples, the coach has still been able to put a team on the park that is firstly competitive, and secondly has a chance to win. We have not looked like either at all during 2007!

I didn't expect us to win today, but I sure as hell expect us to be a lot more competitive!

P.S. I am not for sacking Daniher mid season, but we do need a change at season end, and the way things are going, this will take care of itself.

if, and this is a major if, ND is gonna leave, he should do it around the bye. getting a new coach with a break would work well - check out the team, has half a season with them, etc etc etc

When you support MFC it pays to have a long memory so you can remember the (few and far between) high points. Like the 1987 finals ! I must admit today at half time I expected a 100 point flogging so I guess the fact that did not happen is some small consolation ! But we did win 11/12 last year so we must have been doing something right then. (But we lost twice to Carlton !!). Freeo are under pressure at 0/3 too so both are in the same boat, lets beat them next week and at least get some hope for later in the season.

They are far too reactionary, they have just not got that spark, we can't blame the loss of a heap of injured players, we were hopeless with them in round one.

Daniher should announce his resignation when it becomes mathematically impossible for us to make the 8 as per Tony Shaw's departure from Collingwood. We can then have our new coach selection process up and running so we can make an appointment as soon possible - that may be after the Grand Final if a candidate is at a club in the finals.

This season was all about finishing in the top 4. Starting Zero and Three means that is but a pipe dream. Neale is by all accounts a decent and honourable man but it is clear that he is not a good coach. He must not coach Melbourne next year. 10 years is enough. We need the best Coach we can find, and it is clear that Daniher is not that Coach.

At least he leaves the list in better shape than his predecessor.

Norm Smith would struggle to get a win out of the side we are able to field at the moment - take away players of the calibre of Neitz, Robbo, McLean, Rivers, Sylvia, Bartram, etc, etc, from any side and the too would struggle.

The past few years we have promised a lot and then been hit by injuries towards the end of the season - maybe we are getting all the bad luck early and will wind up with a huge end of season - the right end!!!

Agree this club has a poor history as soon as few of our top players are injured it all goes downhill. We simply dont have a strong leadership group that can take charge, we have the likes of Moloney who got injured busting his rear end to the point of coping a injury.We have a 20yr old Brock Mclean saying that we have a culture of Mental Weakness. The club has a group of so called leaders that are well paid but they continue to fail. Ask yourselfs what impact has White,Yze,Bruce,Travis, Green, on the games when we need our leaders to step up ZERO. Daniher great guy works very hard for the club in promoting it and had it hard in the early days due to no money and instablity at board level but just cant get this group of players to maintain their intensity thus the fadeouts in the last 3 yr seasos along with the up & down years. Daniher needed to make a call on some of the above players a couple of seasons ago to send a message but they continue to get more expensive contracts and the results dont improve. If we are 2-9 at the halfway mark Daniher should go and every player put on notice that the next 11 rounds their performance will be measured and recorded by the interim coach and from there the new coach will anylise their results and decide who will stay or be traded along with some contracts that may have to be reconstructed to reflect their performances.

Good post other than your assessment of ND.

I think he has been a reasonably good coach given the situations he has endured at this Club. The lack of silverware mars him but his efforts for a flat broke club MFC have been creditable.

Every club has injuries, its all about how we respond to adversity.

Not to the extent of the impact players we are missing. You might be able to cover one or two. MFC have 8 out of our critical 10 players missing. In this sort of competition, its cruel. Do that to any other team and watch them fall.

What has been poor has been the limp efforts of senior "star" players in this situation?

Our next captain after Neitz definitely has not been playing for the past two weeks.

For stating that Melbourne needs the best Coach that we can get. And for stating that after starting with no wins from 3 losses in Daniher's 10th season he is quite clearly not the the best Coach for the job.

All teams have injuries. Not all teams play like a disorganised confused rabble. We play like startled rabbits caught in car headlights playing pass the parcel with an imminently to explode nuclear bomb. This was supposed to be the year we made the Top 4 and got the double chance. More likely we will be in the Bottom 4.

There are absolutely no excuses that can be made for our mediocre opening to the year. Absolutely none.

There has got to be a reason why this is happening. The injury list has been covered in this topic ad nausea therefore, we are clear on this & agree that it has something to do with the 0-3 win ratio.

But look at the names that played today. The spine on paper looked great. I looked at that final list last night & thought that it didn't look too bad. We would be a chance to be at least competitive. How could a bunch of experienced players be so hopelessly out of form & play so mediocre? No confidence, no skills, no talking, no plan etc. etc.

Makes me wonder whether the inclusion of McLean, Sylvia etc. in future will make any difference to the mindset of that group!!
