the only spot we have is for a cat B and i doubt we've got anyone lined up to fill that spot now as we would have already announcd it if we did, so baring a LTI we have the full compliment 36-6-1

Clubs can have up to 3 Category B rookies at one time. However, unless the player is considered a potential champion, I doubt we would purse any more rookies at this stage of the journey.

11 unlisted players confirmed to train with AFL clubs over summer

Melbourne’s Primary and Category A Rookie lists are locked in for 2022 but the following is the list of players training at various AFL clubs with the aim of being selected in March:-

Carlton

Joshua Cripps - East Fremantle WA
Tyreece Lieu - Eastern Ranges

Essendon

Dylan Clarke - Essendon AFL
Ronald Fejo jnr - West Adelaide SA
Nicholas Martin* - Subiaco WA

Gold Coast

Nathan Freeman - Frankston VFL

North Melbourne

Marty Hore - Melbourne AFL

St Kilda

Jack Hayes - Woodville West Torrens SA

Sydney Swans

Patrick McCartin - Sydney Swans VFL

West Coast

Kade Dittmar - East Perth WA
Luke Strnadica - East Fremantle WA

I do find it interesting most teams fill their lists rather than bringing a number of options in during summer and having a closer look at them.

Deakyn Smith seemed almost a happy accident last year. There was no buzz about him training on, it just seemed like the right thing to do with the academy. And he thrived once he trained with the group.

It would’ve been a lot with WA border rules to ask young Juddy to come over without a contract and I sense JT and co rate him rather highly for a rookie. But unless there’s standout rookies and your list is really deep I’d favour trialling multiple players.

Let’s not forget that the club’s recruiting staff had their eyes on Judd McVee going back a number of years.  He was an All-Australian at Under-16s level in 2019 and is renowned for his kicking skills and good vision. They considered him low risk and snapped him up as a rookie. Makes sense to me.
