Well folks, it's Friday and still two days until the mighty Demons play again.  Given that it's been a while since we had one of these, not to mention the need for something to lighten the mood of the site somewhat, here is another puzzle for you.

This one is pretty easy and, if it goes off as quickly as I suspect, I have another, trickier one to post.

What do the players in this team have in common?  (You will notice that former Melbourne players are named in red.)

B:  Ross Thornton   Peter Hamilton   Alistair Nicholson

H/B:  Ryan Ferguson   Peter Foster   Peter Dean

C:  Lachie Whitfield   Terry Wallace   Wayne Linton

H/F:  Terry Bright   Lance Arnold   Doug Heywood

F:  Shai Bolton   Darryl Sutton    Steven Armstrong

R:  Rhys Stanley   Nathan Buckley   Noah Anderson

I/C:  Wally Donald   Phil Seaton   Wayne Gordon   Les Woodford.

Is that relevant to the solution, or is that a 'red' herring?

This won't be the answer, but I've noticed that 10 of those names end in -on.

Are they all the names of criminals?  I hasten to add (to avoid defamation proceedings), that I don't mean the footballers themselves. Peter Foster (not the footballer!) certainly is.

Hey, hang on.... yes to which part of my question? 😂

If you combine all of the letters in their names, they form an anagram that when solved, reveals the name of that railway station in Wales?

Sorry hardtack, you still wouldn't have enough letters for that railway station!

the letters when converted to numbers contain the coordinates of the location of the covenant of the ark

And now, how to defend yourself against an assailant armed with a banana!

Uhm, no it’s not.
Also you once pulled me up for using non-words, remember? So what’s the go with “flabbergastation” ????

I can think of another word beginning with F that applies to this puzzle. Yep, starts with F and ends with K and it’s not firetruck. 😉

fiddlestick?

flack?

flask?

freak?

fieldwork ....... that must be it

All the surnames are shared with a famous person who's first name is Barry.

Possibly vice presidents of the United States?

No, no.  I'm afraid my gabber is truly flastered.

I’ll give you a clue. It’s got four letters and it rhymes with Buck.
If you still can’t work it out here’s another clue: the second letter is U and the third letter is C.
You’ll work it out eventually, Mazer. 😁

Has it got anything to do with colour of hair? In particular, red hair?

Flabbergastation (flabber + gas station) is a word usually only heard in the USA and it refers to the sensation of scratching your head and thinking "WTF?" when you see something like this.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
