I've been waiting all day for another of Demonstone's excellent challenges. While I've been waiting I have put together one of my own. What does this team have in common? (Apologies to Demonstone for stealing his thunder...but it's a long time between last Thursday and next Saturday).

B:           Colin Garland (Melb)      Peter Giles (Melb)           Charlie Payne (Ess)

HB:        Nathan Brown (Melb)    Mark Graham (Haw/Rich)           Trent Rivers (Melb)

C:           Brad [censored] (Coll)                Taylor Adams (GWS/Coll)            Daniel Chick (Haw/WC)

HF:        Matthew Bate (Melb)    Ken Hunter (Carlton)      Maverick Weller (GC/St K)

F:           Oscar Allen (WCE)           Doug Wade (Geelong)   Maddie Gay (Melb)

Foll:       Stefan Martin (Melb/Bris/WB)   Clayton Oliver (Melb)     Daisy Pearce (Melb)

Inter:    Bill Sykes (Fitz), Chester Read (Sth Melb/St K), Charles Brownlow (Geel), Marley Williams (Coll/Nth)

Coach: Chris Fagan (Demons)

Edit: The thought never occurred to me that the wingman, Brad, would have his surname censored. It's a common abbreviation of Richard.

1. Can we assume that one of the wingmen is an appendage?

2. Does this have anything to do with the author, Charles [censored]ens?

I think Jack may have it with the Charles Dickens link and all those players' names presumably appear in his books.

I'm not long home and coffee calls, but I'll put my own effort up fairly soon.

Well done. All have the same names as characters in the works of Charles Dickens. All bar one have only one of the names correct, but Bill Sykes (the footballer) gets maximum points for having the same name as Bill Sikes in 'Oliver Twist'.

I wanted to find a way to include the hero of 'Tale of Two Cities', Sydney Carton, as it seemed that the closeness to the names of two teams warranted inclusion but decided not to cloud the issue.

Lovely quiz LDVC which demonstrates your thorough knowledge of Dickens' works.  ;)

Actually, demonstrates my thorough knowledge of how to use Google.

I have read a few of the books above (I recommend Martin Chuzzlewit, by the way, and Great Expectations, although it's not in the list above.)

I know that Dickens is revered as an all-time great author, but I've never been able to get into his books.

My current reading pile consists of a few of Bill Bryson's, a few of Titus O'Reily's and a couple of MFC related ones ("The Red Fox"  and Neale Daniher's "When All Is Said And Done").  That's not to mention both of Supermercado's efforts which are on order and will hopefully arrive in the next few days.

bill bryson is a good read.  read them all.  we even  named a dog bryson

you'd enjoy his 2 books on the english language (if you haven't already read them)

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
