Good match-up today between Crows and Freo. Interested to see whether the game will match the heights of last night. Freo are a balanced outfit were plenty of threat in the forward line. Along with North, ourselves and possibly the Lions one of the best teams in the comp.

Better include Freo in that list. Unbeaten in their last 10 games inc todays bath of Adelaide. They are a huge threat.

I did. I think you misread (or maybe i wasn't clear). after today i think they're the favourite. Tough contested team with plenty of options up front. It'll take a very good team to beat them.

Freo seem to look better overall last year, as they appeared above the pack in structure and talent.  Most likely would have won last year if there was a GF. If we got free in round 1 I reckon they would have beaten us, as its taken a couple of games to get a out grove in.  As for north last night, it was their  first loss to since they lost to us rd1 last year, bookends :) This year free haven't played in the top of the ladder team yet, same with brissie and pies. Like us yesterday, until you play one of us, north, freo, brissie, and maybe pies (Not that impressive to me so far) you don't really know where everyone sits.  

After last night we can say we consider ourselves a top 4 side,  North was out first real opponent, the interesting thing is pies have north this week, but the rest of the top teams have lower table teams.  

With covid, its unlikely we'll get freo and and eagles (Pity for percentage boost) quarantine rules unless we play somewhere northern Australia.   So bulldogs and then only Vic, teams for the short term.  

Good season so far.. Go Dees.

One thing I've noticed is there seems to be a lot of player movement between clubs so far. Are the girls just not being offered long contracts? Or at low pay? And is there a salary cap for the competition?

Looking for more opportunity as they only play what 8 games and finals each year.   Plus clubs are still working out their core group.  From what I gather most a mutual moves, as the new players coming in have shown to be of a higher skill level than the first few seasons of draftees which is to be expected.

They're mostly on year to year or two year contracts. The pay is definetly low which is why theres a number of cross code players still playing other sports. They generally have normal job and use "annual leave" to play their matches, still a few years away before they would be able to make it their sole profession.

On memory the very first year they were paid $5,000 flat fee for the season.   So a definite improvement. How long is it from start of pre-season to end of finals. 

As far as player movement is concerned; 2 years ago a number of our players who hailed from down Geelong way were offered good money to return to the fold. The exception of course was Lilly Mithen, she rejected the offer and we also found a way to gainfully employ her in other ways. While on that subject; anyone on this site who refers to her as " The Mouth" again, will have to be prepared for a little backlash. Sorry I said a little, I meant a lot.

Yes, what a great win by our girls.  The match showcasing some of the highest skills in AFLW, a thrilling edge-of-the-seat finish, plenty of goal scoring and best of all the Dees won.

The North midfield of Kearney, Garner, Riddell, King et al has drawn many plaudits along their 8-game winning streak but on Saturday night our midfield led by Paxy, the dynamic duo Hanks and Mithen, a welcome return by Maddi G and L Pearce was equal to the challenge.

At quarter time Stinear asked for better connection and more predictable forward entries and got what he asked for with 6 goals.  

Gee the quality of footy impressed and it’s entertaining and building a fan base. Pleased to read earlier in this thread that the venerable Old Dee, who like many traditionalists I know and who had dismissed AFLW as not ready are taking a fresh look.  

Being the only sporting alternative to the Lockdown on Saturday night I expect TVs tuned in and stayed for the duration.

Several of our girls have begun the year in career best form with Tyla and Lily both recording around 20 possessions per game.  Both girls impressively dispose of the footy, under pressure and through traffic. Quick kicks and neat handballs are so valuable as many girls still struggle to execute consistently.   At a critical moment in Q4, Hanksy hit up TRex with a gem of a long range pass but the mark was unfortunately dropped.  

Unsung youngsters Shelley Heath (30) a junior Taekwondo Blue-belt who can really tackle and Casey Sheriff (18) a former basketballer who joined us as Daisy’s maternity leave replacement, have taken the wings and are looking stronger and more confident with each week. 

Looking forward to seeing our next match on Sunday 3:10pm at the Western Oval. Libby Birch up against her former team will no doubt be welcomed back to the Kennel.  Go Dees.

Not quite sure when pre-season started but the draft was in early October so assuming it's like the men they were probably in pre-season at that point. The season is 9 weeks plus I think 3 weeks of finals, quite a substantial amount of time that you would have to input for $14k if you're classified as a Tier 4 player.

AFLW Pre season started in Nov I believe but it was not in Oct I don't think.

BUT it had nothing to do with the men's Club pre season timing  which Was Under 4 years started about early Dec for a fortnight  then on Jan 5/6 th the More than 4 years players Commenced and joined in.

Boydie you are about the umpteenth D/L Er that thinks that the men trained FROM October on. If you recall our 2020 season Due to Covid Was delayed and finished about 20 th Sept and players are entitled To 6 weeks leave. Under their agreements. 

The lack of accuracy in posting on D/Land both staggers and disappoints me.

A decent period to give up their time.  But it seems there is improvement every year in their income which us good.

The men's have 6 weeks off at the end of the teams season, do for 1/2 the teams its 6 weeks from the last round.  So November would be earliest for the men's to start training.

I get what you're saying 58 as I wassn't quite but I also stated I wasn't enritely sure. I wasn't saying the men started training in October. I was suggesting that possibly the AFLW preseason had already started by the time their draft was held which was in October. Just like the men had already started preseason training when their resepective draft occured in December.

But the total list joined in Jan and Under 4 years players 2 weeks prior to Xmas or about when the draft occurred in early Dec.
