Umpiring and the rules are a complete mess.

We have a rag tag bunch of semi professional umpires being asked to officiate based on rules that are massively open to interpretation. And on top of that, they are obviously being asked by the AFL to change those interpretations week to week in response to things like Clarkoโ€™s comments.

Bevo was right all along when Clarko made those comments..

In the latest version of the rules I can find (2019), there is no mention of anything to do with this.

Closest is this:

17.5.2 ย Free Kicks - Marking Contests
A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick in a Marking contest against a Player ย
.....
(c) ย unduly pushes or bumps an opposition Player;

......

Just on one point, what does unduly mean?

Now I know what it means but how does that apply to football?

If I am strong and bump or push you away from the drop zone in order to take a mark is that unduly pushing or bumping? Or am I simply using my strength advantage? We want forwards crashing packs, but can they really?

It is a farce.

And don't get me started on last nights match umpiring, FMD - give it back now, not quick enough!!!

What does "unduly pushes or bumps an opposition player" - and in particular the word "unduly" -ย mean? It can't mean either Prohibited Contact (which I assume is a defined term elsewhere likely to include high contact andย arm chopping) or engaging in Rough Conduct (which I assume is also a defined expression) as both those forms of contact are addressed in (e) and (f).

Like many things in the rules of the game, "unduly" is not defined. The rules areย a dogs breakfast. Poorly written and full of clauses describing circumstances that are commonly understood by fans, but in fact are near jibberish.

(Prohibited Contact and Rough Conduct are defined and mean pretty much what you would intuitively guess.)

Kossiย needs a spell in the secondsย & a rocket from Goodwin, stop flying for speccys & give the handball when thereโ€™s a teammate in the goal squareย

Love his forward pressure but youโ€™ve got to get the ball also,ย itโ€™s pretty importantย

And l know thereโ€™s no seconds atm haha

Hopefully the no-stat highlights change and become actual highlights!

Kossie is flashy, but he needs to starts contributing if he wants to retain his place in the team. He was the same at underage level, looked flashy and exciting, but ultimately contributed little. Forward coach needs to tell him to stop flying for marks and get front and centre for the crumb. He missed 3-4 goal opportunities last night because he made poor decisions. The skillset is there, now we need to give him a footy IQ lesson.ย

Could not agree more.

Burning Hannan was a really bad mistake. A mistake he compounded by missing a soda with his shot (by a fair margin it must be said).

An absoluteย gimme goalย if he handballs (even a poor one) as there was not Lions player in coee of Hannan.

A strange decision as he surely he saw him and so far in his (very) shorter career has often looked to give it off as the firstย option. So much so that a few times i've thought just take the shot yourself Kossie.

A rush of blood, which happens for young players, but it was terrible timing as we had finally got back into the match and were starting to swarm them. And simply couldn't take advantage of that pressure.ย

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

The Dogs reigned supreme in 2018 with an inaugural AFLW premiership cup and the Demons matched this feat by winning the cup as the Season 7 2022 champions.Meggs wasnโ€™t born when the Doggies won their first VFL premiership cup against the Demons in 1954. Covid prevented many Demons fans from legally witnessing the victorious 2021 AFL Grand Final cup performance between the Demons and the Bulldogs, but we all grin when remembering those magnificent seven third quarter goals. ย

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturdayโ€™s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFLโ€™s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
