The other thing this shows is how much the MCC is ripping out of AFL at each game.

No fans so the only income is from ground advertising.  How much do the clubs get normally?

I seem to recall hearing plenty of times we needed 20-25K to break even from an MCG home match....how is it with zero attendees that they can give us $150-200K?

The MCC is very little help to the MFC. My understanding is that the MFC is not seen particularly as a part of the MCC, when I thought it was.

These payments are good news, but I hope we've got strategy around dealing with the MCC going forward.

The less MFC people on the board, the less they care about MFC.

Does that mean Carlton and Essendon will reap from marvel as well. Why are those 2 clubs on the MCG " home grounds " anyway ?

Good question(s)!

How this club ever allowed "shared usage' of the ground we built and developed for over 160 years has got me [censored].

We could have been receiving rent from these plebs had the right deals been put in place at the right time.

More lament....

More anguish.

How? The ground is owned by the state government and managed by the state government appointed MCG Trust.

Was this always the case though?

Looks nothing like it.

The MCC  started the game of football "to keep cricketers fit in winter".

We were the only club allowed on the ground.

Yes it is crown land -we paid the rates over more than a century before it went into profitable territory.

There is no dispute that the MFC and the VFL /AFL have profited due to our invention of/participation in/development of and largesse in the game of Australian rules.

All councils parasite off the people who made the land a profitable space-in this case both the MCC and the MFC.

There is no disputing this-I will not accept contrary opinions on this matter.,

Well there you go. I'd assume this puts a massive hole in the MFC budget and any hope of remaining unassisted. Conservatively it's about another million dollars we would have to find.

Be interested to know if we planned for the event of a written off 2020 season after the shut down in the first place.

Reckon COVID still has a bit to go and I'd be very surprised if the 2020 season is completed at all. I just can't see COVID not spreading across the country again. Stage 4 for Victorians tomorrow (yet to be announced) and NSW won't be far behind.

I hope we had a contingency after the first stoppage of play to deal with this in the event that there was a second wave.

Another way our lack of home games to start the year has hurt us. I hope there will be a away to transfer at least some of what we would've got over to the games at Metricon and the Gabba.

A F, re stage 4 restrictions I cannot see these being applied outside of hotspot suburbs. At the moment regional Victoria, including Greater Geelong are not under stage 3 despite more active cases than a number of Melbourne Metro councils. I reckon we will see additional LGA's moved to stage 3 and stage 4 introduced in specific hotspot postcodes.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

A couple of Demonland Trackwatchers headed down to Gosch's Paddock to bring you their observations from today's training session before the Demons head off to Perth for their final Practice Match. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Beautiful morning, not much wind, more than a couple of dozen spectators.  The players were up and about, boisterous and having fun. One of their last drills were three teams competing in a hard at it, handball game in a small area. Goody

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
