I wish he could come back now and end this curse.

If, you want that Demon attitude back,  then bring back Checker first.

It's not Smithy we're missing, its the Political Correctness that rid us of Smithy,  that continues to kill this club.  Political Correctness was just arising in the 60's,  and the New-Broom swept the winning Demon, right out of the club.

People more concerned with their own world perceptions,  took over the world & the Mfc,  and have done increasingly more damage to the way things were, and were done.  For good and for bad.

For good,  black rights, womens rights. etc.

For bad,  new mining activities, and forestry practices,  outsourcing, etc

Some things need to step back to older ways.  Fishing activities. Forestry,  and the Demon attitudes.

Some things need to keep modernising.  Womens, Human rights, population growth, decentralisation, etc.

Horrible recruiting decisions such as  selecting  Jimmy ( "confidence issues"  ) Toumpas over Ollie Wines have nothing to do with Political Correctness .

Never would have picked this as the reason we haven't won a premiership since 1964. I thought it was because we weren't good enough.

I think climate change might have cost us dearly as well.

That attitude goes right thru the club,  not just players,  so it underpins everyone's jobs,  and how they go about them.  Whether 'the staff' are a bit shy in attitude,  or go 'hell-for-leather',  to get what we want...  whether that be recruits  or HQ's,  training venues,  or growing our support base.

This attitude must invade every  nook'n'cranny of the club,  and everyone in it.

Hell we all know its been missing for half a century,  and still counting.

Well, the climate in our support base has certainly gotten cold,  over the past 50Yrs.

Interestingly the same time frame,  as the worst of our climate warming.   Since 1970, we seen the warming and the rise in inflationary investments,  and homes becoming commodities.  And out of affordable range,  for the most vulnerable of our fellow Australians.

So yeah,  as it happens,  you seem to be onto sump-thin, W45.

You seemed to have neglected Big Carl played for St Kilda first.
This post could be on a Saints board.
I believe the blonde bombshell is the only player to have returned to two clubs - St k, Melb, St K, Melb

Apologies, RE-read your post. You do acknowledge he returned to Saints.
only player to do it twice.

Didn't Big Carl belt 5 or 6 Collingwood players in his last game for us? (Round 22 1980)

The headband & the handkerchief were his trademarks.

Not to be messed with was Ditterich.  A nasty piece of work and of course, a very good player.

Laurie Fowler regarded him as his best coach.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
