6. Don't switch.

7. Kick points (rather than goals) wherever possible.

I'm not able to get to all but one match a year, so my views on game plans are based on ignorance.  But was it not the case that we were the highest scoring team in 2018?  We still managed to lose a lot of games, so presumably the defense wasn't up to it.  With a new solid backline and wings in 2020 maybe whatever forward game plan worked in 2018 might look a lot better this year?

I don't buy the line that it was easy to beat the aging cats and hawks in the finals and met reality against WCE (who we did beat a few weeks earlier, albeit not in a final.)  While we may not have beaten them in any case, I suspect we were buggered physically and after a few minutes, mentally.

During the last 10 weeks of 2018 we became the number one defensive team in the AFL.   Not hard to win games when you restrict teams to 46 points like Geelong were in the EF.  There are some signs of the same in preseason.  I think that’s what Goodwin is working on.  
 

In 2018 though we found it hard to score against the top teams.  We still need to improve that.

Agree we were totally buggered by the time we met Eagles but don't forget they had a few key players missing in that round 22 win including Josh Kennedy and then Darling early in the first quarter so they had no forward line and we still very nearly lost.

People are forgetting we'd hardly beaten a top 8 team until that round 22 win against injury depleted Eagles. It looks like a lot of the game style has been improved but I've thought for 4 years this is the missing piece to become a real contender.

People are forgetting we'd hardly beaten a top 8 team until that round 22 win against injury depleted Eagles. It looks like a lot of the game style has been improved but I've thought for 4 years this is the missing piece to become a real contender. 

Yep. We had a great run into the Finals and did well in the first 2 weeks. But the Eagles totally smashed us in week 3 completely

Can someone tell me what the hell are the two new rules that we enforcing this season.....

First ...the one about holding players for 360 plus degrees and more without penalty. Is that to practice throwing said player over fence, or what?

Second.....the one about short kicks to be distance checked by Umpire, depending on who he/she supports?

Actually, I want to know how at the end of 360 plus degrees you can then release the ball straight out over the boundary line but it isn't deliberate. Oh well, it's a practice game for Umpires too. As long as they're not practicing being inept.

You’d have thought that , like the players, the umps would be practising what they were going to preach in the main season

They were deplorable and confusing. I hope it’s not a sign of things to come!

And for the record, I wasn't trying to liken you to someone of that age, it just felt it was a conversation that was going nowhere from both ends.  Neither of us are going to change our views, so what's the point?

Actually I'm not fussed. It is easier than talking up to people. I have to admit to being bored, bored, bored and can't wait for the real stuff to start. I find myself trawling through posts at the moment looking for every titbit/ morsel of information that gives context or insight into what is happening with the Club. I will admit to winding a few people up and that's an interesting tactic I used in negotiations and management in general. It's not always pleasant for the person on the other end but it is often instructive and helps with figuring out what peoples traits are, the information they have and the way in which they think about things.

As to this thread; I've been over your posts and your original premise/question and I'm perplexed. You wanted me to be more insightful regarding the game plan/style and I tried to point out (not clearly, obviously) that Goody has stated ad nauseam that the plan/style will be based on "contested football". The closest I've seen him spell out the "plan" is with his comments and Burgess's comments at the Forum. There has been consistent messaging and given what we have seen in practice to date, there is evidence of it being adopted. I don't know if you watched or listened to all the info put out by the Club but you seem (yes, that's an assumption) to have focused on the way Goodie is now telling the fans what the team is doing and how the plan will be recognisable. In your subsequent posts you have even acknowledged where there is evidence the improvements to the basic strategies and tactics are being implemented.  If we go through Binger's post with the dot points that identify failures during last year and to some extent in 2018, I hope everyone can see what is being done to address those areas. The one remaining area that some believe hasn't been addressed is the forward entries. While I would like to see some improvement in this area I believe it is a work in progress and it is something we are actively addressing. Frankly, as long as we are hitting some of the targets and continue our forward entry dominance and the forward retention is ramped up, the results should take care of themselves.

If you've read this far then I hope you've a better understanding of where I was coming from.

You don't seem to have had the same trouble with Wise so I hope your not to upset with me continuing his analogue. The questions around the divulging  of "The Plan" just seems illogical to me and serves no real purpose. The basics have been explained, there is evidence of implementation and the next phase is to see what the results are.

A petulant 5yr old would stamp the feet and demand more detail about forward entries but what purpose would it serve?
