Max Gawn provided the club’s brightest ray of sunshine in a dismal year, claiming All Australian honours as a ruckman for a third time in four years, polling 17 Brownlow Medal votes and sharing the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Memorial Trophy with Clayton Oliver. A measure of the respect the club has for him was his second Ron Barassi Jnr Trophy award for leadership qualities, such has been his influence on the playing group.

 

The Dees big man led the competition in hit-outs per game and averaged a league-high 12 hit-outs to advantage. His work ethic behind the scenes is second to none and his ability to share his knowledge with his teammates throughout the season was nothing short of outstanding.

The only thing missing from his game is the Captaincy.

I think you are right.

Great year by Gawn but the challenge is and always has been to the coaching department to leverage his dominance.

I would like to see him take the ball out of the ruck more and then deliver in  a set play to a particular area.

At the season's outset most thought Gawn's dominance would deliver us an advantage with the 6-6-6 set up but for reasons that many have tried to explain it didn't.

l also think we need to consider resting him for some games or perhaps taking in Preuss (for 3-4 games) and having him ruck for say 60% of the time. Not sure the coaching staff managed him well when the season was done and dusted. He is one of the few discriminators we have.

Anyway as I said great year and hopefully he has another injury free year next year.

A superstar of the competition and we have had precious few of them over the last 50 years.

Was speaking to a Geelong supporter the other day. They were so envious of the fact Melbourne had a ruckman of the calibre of Max. 

Now we need the team around him to be worthy of his excellence. He already leads by example. Give him the captaincy.
