Maybe, but with Danger, Selwood and Hawkins all getting into their twilight years, I'm hoping they fall off a cliff very soon.

i've been hoping the same for half a decade!

super professional, super well-run, well-resourced, and excellent developmental club

Plus they have the lifestyle attractions which appeals to many...Cats supporters I know believe they will never bottom out.   They only negative they agree on is that Chris Scott is not a great coach.

cats have had one of the best sides over the last few years and definitely should've won a premiership in the time since scott's first year

that team coached itself

The best parts about this news;

1. North must've upped their offer considerably, and when you add that to Goldstein also staying, means their bucket is a bit lighter

2. Geelong miss out on someone they were expecting to just walk in to their club.  Arrogant knobs.

I wonder if that cliff we've all been predicting Geelong is going to fall off for 5 years may just come soon as a result of their poor finals record. All well and good to be playing finals each year (we could be so lucky!) but if you get bundled out of them easily every year is there much point?

Will be interesting to see if they get Steven signed up and another player or two. Their best (aside from Kelly) are all +29 (as is Steven).

They should get at least 1 first rounder for Kelly. If Freo get the Saints pick 5 for Hill, I'd think that might be part of an offer for Kelly, assuming he's open to Freo as a destination.

I'd love Kelly to demand West Coast, so that Geelong don't get the best deal!  He's uncontracted, so he has some bargaining power, and it might mean West Coast trade up their selections to get him in the preseason draft, rather than giving Geelong the earth to get him.

I'm intrigued by the notion that a non-FA player out of contract has bargaining power. The only power I can see is the threat to go in the draft/preseason draft, which has no guarantees of destination and burns bridges. I can't recall the last time that happened successfully, perhaps Luke Ball?

While a trade (between Geelong and West Coast/Freo) will most likely happen, there are other ways for it not to;;

1. If Kelly wants to go to West Coast, but West Coast can't meet the demands of Geelong, then Kelly could sit out for 12 months and get to them as a delisted free agent I believe (similar to what Cam McCarthy, although McCarthy was contracted to GWS the year he sat out).

2. If Geelong aren't happy with what West Coast offer, and Freo make them an offer that they are happy with, Kelly could refuse and just nominate for the draft.  West Coast will need to trade up the draft order, so as long as they have a pick before Freo, then they can use that pick on him.  (Not saying this will happen, but they could offer Gaff and Pick 13 to us for Pick 2, then they use Pick 2 on Kelly). In this scenario, Geelong lost Kelly for nothing, and the Eagles lost a first round pick and a (very good) player.

As I said, the likely scenario will be a complicated trade between Geelong and West Coast, but if Geelong be silly about it, there's options to shaft them.

Yes, I agree those those hypotheticals are possible, just that I can't see either of them happening. IMO WCE have no choice but to pay up for what he's worth.

Cam McCarthy was traded to Freo, he wasn't a DFA. McCarthy, 7, 34, 72 traded for pick 3

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

    Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

    TRAINING: Friday 28th February 2025

    A couple of Demonland Trackwatchers headed down to Gosch's Paddock to bring you their observations from today's training session before the Demons head off to Perth for their final Practice Match. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Beautiful morning, not much wind, more than a couple of dozen spectators.  The players were up and about, boisterous and having fun. One of their last drills were three teams competing in a hard at it, handball game in a small area. Goody

    THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

    In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

    RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

    One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
