From Prelim To Wooden Spoon?

Keep on hearing the same from club & co .....my question is along with many what are the issues with this footy club that results in them falling off the cliff after tasting some success. History continues to repeat itself.

It's not up to me to come up with the reasons for our failure. We are not paid the big bucks andย I don't have all the information. It would be folly. I can only comment on what I see during our matches. If there's something going on behind the scenes, we need to address that internally and that's up to the leadership within the club.

Yes. Many on here refuse to see that History does repeat itself at this Club, i wish it didnโ€™t but the evidence is irrefutable.ย Expectation has been a knockout punch ? many timesย

Mate, people keep putting words in other people's mouths. No one has said one way or the other RE history repeating itself. Just you.

And what happened prior to 2018 has very little impactย on what happens now. There's no point talking about April 1973 or whatever other failure we had 40+ years ago.ย That's irrelevant. We need to deal with the last 12 months and factors for our current failure, not bang on about the distant past.

Yes. We need a Culture that refuses to lie down

When did we last have that?

CAMPBELL BROWN: "I just feel that if you take a forward and you put him down back, you lose what they can give you as a forward, and that's kicking goals."

Brilliant analytical mind there.

Objectively speaking, Dees are the wooden spooners this year. You canโ€™t really count the GC Suns with all their club issues.ย

We are the laughing stock of the AFL & if it wasn't for GC we would finish last!

Lived through so many embarrassing periods since the 70s & this club just continues to find a way to bring misery to its members/supporters!

Heads need to roll from our conditioningย staff, ย to our coaches & serious questions of our leadership inc Goodwin on how such a fall has occurred!

Pert will need to show what his made off & make the changes needed or the misery will continue!

Whats another year inย ย 5 decades!

ย

Needs to be an investigation into what happened this year, letting Roos go after 3 years was a mistake, should have given him 2 million to stay on. Donโ€™t think Goodwin is up to it!!!!ย

It's alright though! We've had injuries, and there's always next year! Besides, pick 2 on the horizon! Look on the bright side! Goodwin is the man! etc etc

In all honesty, the further the season progresses, the worse it gets.

We're going to finish below Carlton. I don't give a [censored] what the variables are. Or how many injuries we've had. It's abhorrent. It's a [censored] disgrace where we are.

Goodwin should be presenting and raising the stakes for his own and the team's KPIs for 2020. He and is football department have utterly destroyed the fabric, albeit thin one, that had been established by Roos and Jackson. I can accept a drop after 5 years of linear growth consider where we were. But where we are now...it's inexcusable. Jones, Gawn, TMac, Lewis should be embarrassed. Leadership onfield has been pathetic.

I'm giving Goodwin 16 matches to turn it around. And that's generous considering how much of a [censored] mess this team is in right now.

I give him 10 games next year, if we are less than 5 wins he can pack his bags, sick of this [censored]ย

Agreed and it highlights for me the importance of confidence and getting early wins on the board. We talk about game style and structures a lot, but if you're getting beaten every week playing a certain way, you start to not believe in what you're doing and hope that changes come (ie a new pre season).

It's a bit like when the figurative dam wall breaks in the fourth quarter of a game and a team knows they can't win, all of a sudden, a game that was close becomes a blow out. They start to go through the motions, knowing they can't win. That's where we've been for much of the season and it's why under Roos, getting as many pre season wins as possible to build momentum going intoย the season proper, was the rhetoric out of the FD at the time.

With a softer draw next year, if we can build momentum early like Collingwood did up until the bye in 2018 (minus their first two games) and even we did through that 6 game stretch last year, anything can happen at the pointy end of a season with a bit luck, confidence and work rate. Just look at Brisbane.

Opening the season 1-5 with four beltings, unfitness, further injuries, and our gameplan being repeatedly unpacked and taken to pieces is where this season went to water. 4-7 since then but if you ranked our 12 losses, my view is that the worst five were the first five.ย

We've made mid-season changes to the coaches, to the players (e.g. Jones, Lewis, Brayshaw, Fritsch), and to the game plan (more kick-mark, less play on, less reliance on stoppages). We're getting our first choice back six playing together. It's not there yet, but I think we can get it there and with a good off-season, some key list changes, and a focus on this modified game plan, 2020 can be significantly different to 2019.

I swear they've ripped those stats from Demonland. Most of them have been posted here in some capacity. They've just readjusted.

Problem is they got the first one (ladder position last year) wrong.

It says we finished 3rd last year but we finished 4th overall (losing prelim but Richmond were higher on the ladder so finish 3rd), or 5th on H&A ladder position (which is the position the articles gives Fremantle for 2015, when it finished top of the ladder).

Nothing funnier than an article written about a club being 'irrelevant'.

someone should look it up in the dictionary.

GC are irrelevant - ie they suck and no one cares.ย

we suck butย people do care

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
