    However,  that is easier said than done.  The sport is harder to umpire than it ever was and the sport itself is often hard to watch as a spectacle anyway (for many)

    There is no other sport in the world where the umpires cop so much abuse - nothing comes close.  And there has to be a reason for why that is.  All the other umpires/referees in all the other sports can't just be way more competent.  That argument doesn't make sense.

    The umpiring is never going to improve whilst we have so many grey areas in the game coupled with so much congestion.  Making the umpires full time would help but if the grey areas and congestion remain,  the problem remains.

    Which has all led to more fights in the crowd,  more abuse,  more frustration,  more over-zealousness of security staff and then we try and remedy the situation with a band-aid approach.

    Make the sport more enjoyable to watch by ridding the game of the congestion & flooding and at the same time making the rules more defined for decision making by the umpires. 

    Less players on the ground with minimum rotations for starters.  A more open game is much much easier to officiate and at the same time,  better to watch (for many)

    Supporters would still abuse umpires and be frustrated with umpiring decisions but that would be minimised.  Or at least kept to a manageable level. 

    This takes the chocolates as the most sensible post in this thread ( excluding mine ). Keep up the good work macca !

    Maybe it would help if the umpires paid a free kick against the team of a fan who was abusing an umpire. That could help the game improve as a spectacle.

    A poster to Kennetts column in the Security industry pointed out that the Security contact holder is a Sydney company who have sub contracted the work out. This is usually the case when you see a large grouping of one ethnic community quickly dominate an industry. I strongly suspect that the sub contacting company who is directly employing Indian workers who are student visa holders and likely not meeting award conditions.

    None of which Kennett knew when he assumed dark skinned people must be "new arrivals" who know nothing about Australian rules football

    Not that "a poster" isn't always the best source of information, but as far as I know the security contract for Marvel Stadium is AIG Security who are based in Fairfield, VIC.

    What exactly are you basing your assertion on that all the security staff are 'Indian students'?

    Interesting to see the reaction of the usually uninvolved Cyril to Jeff's comments. I'm assuming the quality of his comments wouldn't have come as a surprise to Cyril given his rocky history with his former President.

    The same suspicion I had with Seven Eleven workers, Service Station workers and other industries where young Indians dominate a profession. All found to be being employed illegally and the majority on Student Visas or work permits.

    You're still missing the point. What is your basis for assuming the security industry is 'dominated' by 'young Indians'?

    I've worked closely with that industry for 24 years and that's not been my experience at all.

    Well then you do not follow it to closely at the MCG. Again you are splitting hairs. The discussion is in the context of the recent issues at the footy not the Security industry. Surely that does not need to be stated on a footy forum about fans behaving badly.

    No, you're the one who brought up the ethnic background and Visa conditions of the security at Marvel Stadium and then stated 'young Indians' are 'dominating' the security industry.

    Now you're moving the goal posts to the MCG, 7/11 stores and crowd behaviour.

    So once again I ask, what are you basing your assumption on?

    That is a blatant lie. All young Indian workers(where they dominate a profession) found to be being employed illegally! That is absolute rubbish.

    Last comment by me. Do you realise you are employed illegally if you are underpaid or denied proper super and other workplace conditions. That is what the enquiry found to those stores it looked into

    I happen to employ a young Indian, at above award rates with the correct super and with appropriate workplace conditions. So I think that makes you wrong, again.

    The poster was somewhat on the money. I said Marvel when it should have referred to the MCG.

    Appreciate that mate, but the context of Kennett's comments revolved around the staff at Marvel Stadium.

    Either way, I still maintain your assumption the security industry is 'dominated' by 'young Indians' is at best off the mark.

    But I'll leave it at that as we're going back and forth over the same ground now.

      A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

      What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
