Why?  We have had an operating profit over this period as I understand it which would be the envy of many others.  We are paying off debt. As PJ said on SEN just recently, this club needs an extended period of stability.  Unlike Macca who thinks the last three years is all that matters, it's really just the first baby steps in setting this club up.  We should be working closely with the AFL to ensure this happens.

Our saviour might be the Bentleigh Club.  It is worth millions and properly utilized could replace much of our pokies revenue.   What a brilliant move that was by Joe.  You see Macca, things that happened more than 3 years ago do matter.

okay ... of the 12 clubs I mentioned ... who have we substantially out performed over the last 3-4 years.

Comparing us to our previous basket case is not enough in the sense that while we have been moving to our break even situation the bulk of the clubs have been powering away.

And remember to compare like with like and compare operating profits. Then look at what other clubs are doing with their operating profits to move in front of the pack. Clubs are non profit organizations so they look to reduce net profit. Operating profit is the key.

If you really want to see how badly we are performing .. remove the AFL equalisation payments. (I don't recommend this because as Macca has pointed out these payments are in truth to make up for the fact that we along with a few other clubs are shafted by the fixed draw.)

Just to finish off... I am not complaining about the job done over the last three years but am merely trying to emphasise that without a tectonic shift we are not going anywhere fast financially.

DJ you were the one who said compared to 12 other clubs we are poor.  I asked you to substantiate your statement.

GCS, GWS, Brisbane, & Freo - Are interstate teams and are not our concern - we dont compete for the same dollars. 

North & Saints - it will come down to our ability to not out run the Tiger that wants to consume us, more to our ability to out run the Roos, Saints & Bulldogs that under-pins our survival.

Think it clear from the fixture the AFL is strengthening the financial positions of Collingwood, Carlton & Tigers.

But I must confess I'm more like you "things that happened more than 3 years ago do matter." And they were not all bad. PJ has admitted on a number of occasions he inherited a club with a very sound financial business plan.

I'll speculate again - 12 good players ...

Jones,  Oliver,  Gawn,  Viney,  Lewis,  T-Mac,  Jetta,  Hibberd,  Lever.  Petracca,  Hunt & Tyson.  Some would argue on a few of the choices and that's fair enough too.  Each to their own. 

Then we've got Salem,  Garlett,  Vince,  Frost,  Brayshaw,  ANB,  Oscar and a few others who can (or might) step up.  Plus, the 4 new draftees.   Surely there is one diamond in the rough.  

All the games are winnable but we need to win at least 14 of them.  And that is possible.  Not probable but you never know.  There isn't a team out there that we should fear. 

We need a good run with injuries too ... this past season was a disaster in terms of continuity. 

My philosophy has always been that X amount of good players often equates to X amount of wins (as long as the coaching is top notch as well)

I would include Hogan, so you could say 13 good players.

That is a large oversight on my part DeeZone ... so 13 good players it is then (in my humble opinion)

Best 22 always contains any number of players who may or may not be absolute starters. 

Any of those 13 listed players would ordinarily not be dropped because of poor form so it's a more than decent base. 

What we need to be a true contender are 5 or 6 players with real star quality.  But competition within the ranks can bring out that star quality.

Hopefully we unearth a couple more good players with our 4 draft picks.
