Training - Monday 9th January, 2017

Monday's open training session is advertised to start at 11.00am.

Players can't take their places in the best 22 for granted. There's going to be strong competition among them for a number of spots so the intensity of pre season training will increase.

I'm looking forward to reports from those who are lucky enough to have the time to make it there.

Thanks Jack.  Pleased to read on the MFC website that it's at Gosch's (albeit an 11am start) and not at Casey.  This means that I can still fit in training tomorrow, and the necessary 'family things', before heading home to Canberra ... such is my love for the Melbourne Football Club, and in particular, my excitement about its near and longer-term future.  Go Dees!

Oh dear, I think I've had too much wine!

Just arrived. Jack Watts in rehab with ANB, King, JKH & Hibberd ... main group in lap warm-up

Small rehab group. Is Tyson training? And if so in which group?

Some in the main group may be non contact, so when the contact beings maybe they go back to rehab group?

Watts running boundary and stretching out for 200. Trenners doing strengthening with elastic straps. Main group on full ground pass and play on activity

Hibberd also stretching out on the boundary now. Main group split into smaller groups for in close handball and tackling routines. Lots of body contact in this one. One small group still doing short kicks under pressure from a defender

Have to leave soon. Main group still rotating through small group in close stuff. Can't help but notice how good Viney is in these in an under activities. He and Jones are very competitive

The half backs, Bernie, Salem, Wagner and Frost are in a side step and short kick activity. Now all called back into centre of ground

Selfish.

Full ground spread now, very quick movement and the occasional blooper as they are constantly under pressure. Overall, the standard is impressive. Will leave you on this note... we'll talk!

Lewis looking good, in the full ground activity there wasn't much movement upfield and he waited before pinpointing a 40m pass to the middle.

Harmes also looking sharp.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
