I'm now waiting for the Scully wants back to Melbourne thread......

If you are happy to put pen to paper for big bucks, then you had better be man enough to see it through.

Wow, pretty pathetic "leadership" from a captain.

Thats the bottom line Saberfang.  Well said.  Some soft types on here getting a bit PC.  Stuff Ablett.  He signed for three years and for heaps so he just needs to see it out.  As hard as he is and all that I still reckon he is soft.  Not a leaders shoelace.

Money does not equal happiness. He's played some terrific football at Gold Coast but it's clear his heart isn't in the team anymore.

Anymore?

Never was.

As for captaincy material, other than his playing ability, he would have scored a 0/10 for everything else; like commitment, attendance, articulation, communication....

Makes Richard Vandenburg look like Mick Voss.

Would we have him?

Gary Ablett Jr, Australia's first playing chaplain.

GA: Gather round me, my flock. For you are as lambs unto me. Ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies. Let not your hearts be faint; fear not and do not tremble. Now, I want a good clean game today. Ye shall not blaspheme or use uncouth language. It is written, the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. And, should one of our opponents commit violence unto thee, turn him the other cheek. For it is written, whosoever shall smite thee--

Player: Ah, Gary.

GA: Please, my son. Call me Pastor Gary. Recall when Moses went into battle, a thousand--

Player: (sighs) Right. Pastor Gary.

GA: Yes, my son.

Player: Pastor Gary. The game's already started and we're 4 goals down.

GA: Oh, was that the siren? I thought it was the horn of Gabriel. Fear not. Recall the parable of the three ... My flock. Are ye listening? Recall the-- Guys. Guys! Come back here! I haven't finished! ... oh screw it. [censored] the lot of ye.

Gary Ablett has an enviable record.

However in going to the Gold Coast, he could not resist temptation and the pursuit of material wealth. That's OK and no doubt the Lord would be forgiving.

However, from a pure football viewpoint there was a cost.

We will never know but one thinks that his star would have been even brighter if he had stayed at Geelong. He would have played in another premiership and played heaps of finals. His exposure to the football world, the media and the public would have been much greater staying in Victoria. His greatness better appreciated now and for posterity. Players who grab the money and run are never viewed in the same light as those who remain with their original club. The cup becomes a little tarnished. One can understand players leaving poorly performing clubs for finals success, but leaving a successful club like Geelong to go to the GC must be seen from a football viewpoint as a mistake. Example, the late great Robbie Flower. His legacy would not have been the same if he had jumped ship to another club. In Ablett's case a return to Geelong would not restore the shine to his football cup.

Perhaps.

Perhaps not.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
