I think it is obvious the coaches are trying to develop a more attacking game style which involves an attacking, line breaking defence. In the 1st 3 rounds we have already seen the 2 most experienced but primarily negating backmen in Dunn and Garland overlooked for potentially more attacking backmen in Oscar McDonald, Wagner, and have also used Bernie Vince, and at times Nathan Jones across half-back. I'm not saying O McDonald and Wagner at this stage of their careers are better or more attacking than Dunn and Garland but I think the coaches are experimenting to try and teach and coach them to adapt to that game style.

Very comparable actually.  When Gibson left North he was seen as just a journeyman ie a good ordinary player. At Hawthorn he has got better & better.  After 4/5 years Garland was seen as a potential top notch player.  He played very well on Buddy Franklin early in his career & was hailed as the prototype "swing man".   Sadly since then he has stalled or gone backwards whereas Gibson has blossomed.

That is not true. He had four seasons at Norf improving significantly with each one. He was targeted by Hawthorn to fill the role he is playing now. Garland did play well early on but something happened and he began to have brain fades and disposal issues.

Gibson's first 3 years at NM were statistically speaking very similar with little improvement.  In his 4th year he improved significantly.  Likewise in his first 3 years at Hawthorn his stats were just so so.  After that however his career really took off whereas at the same age Garland's career went south.

If he had improved significantly why did Norths let him go......they needed the steak knives?

Garland has spent the last few years getting sunburn on the roof of his mouth watching the ball sail back over his head because we have turned it over in the midfield, he was fine in the NAB Challenge, just had a drop in form, suggest mainly because he was too afraid to leave his own man and help out Tommy Mc against Daniher, he was in a no win situation

Give it away Saty, or at least do some research. Hawthorn gave up picks 25 and 41 for Gibson. That's not steak knives.

As for Garland, he was pathetic in the NAB Challenge. He was equally bad against GWS, yet you described his game as "brilliant". So based on your assessment, he was dropped after 1 poor game. Laughable.

With the talent they had coming through a second and third round pick for Hawthorn was steak knives at that time, if he was so good where was the first found pick, where did I say Garland was brilliant, I thought he was serviceable against GWS and poor against Essendon, particularly coming back to help Tommy Mc, I hope he was dropped after one poor game, Roos said as much in his presser, there is less tolerance now, he failed in his role and so did Brayshaw (who was underdone, and the coaching staff have accepted that), but he still has to go back

My point was a poster said he had improved each year, you think Norths would have fought a bit harder to keep him if he was that good

Have to disagree there Saty. Tommy Mac was rarely anywhere near Daniher.
