Well actually they are two different things.

1. Taking the money. Agree he would have been stupid not to. I don't blame him for leaving, considering what we got, I am thrilled about it.

2. Lying to Jimmy. Disagree. Whatever Jimmy got wrong as President, he was a Legend Player of the Club, who happened to be dying. He deserved the truth. It could have been kept confidential if needed. 

3. I add this one. Lying to the members.  He didn't need to. He could have just said he will consider it when the season ended or no comment.

It's foolish placing that much weight in the words of a 19-20 year old. He was placed in, what was at that time, an unprecedented situation. And with all due respect to the great Jim, I'd hope he would've understood that.

I was a little annoyed at the time but in hindsight it's difficult to place too much blame on the young man. Holding a grudge against him after all this time just seems so crazy to me, especially in light of how well it turned out from our end.

It's just part of sport. We love a good rivalry or grudge, it's part of the passion. I don't think anyone wishes him genuine harm or ill-will, it's all just part of the theatre of sport.

I agree. Although all clubs have many super loyal players on their lists respectively.

That not all players are super loyal (and have different drivers/priorities) doesn't mean loyalty is dead.

I reckon Nathan Jones is pretty happy to be a Demon. For life.

Not every player leaves a club for money or the chance to play finals. Plenty of elements need to fall into line for a player to be a long term, one club player these days, even if their desire/intention is only ever to be a long term, one club player.

I still think most players wish to have a long term, successful career with the club at which they're initially drafted.

 

I watched a clip of Jesse Hogan on AFL360 after his Rising Star win. He said that the club is only bringing in players with a competitive nature when recruiting, rather than putting the most emphasis on skill. While this is something that is obvious to most of us, it gave me renewed confidence in our list building strategy having heard it straight from a player. I think that competitiveness is something that drives loyalty in football, as most players want to be a part of the rise and see out all their hard work, rather than jumping ship to a club that's already successful. While it may be harder to achieve the ultimate success by starting at the bottom and remaining with a team through lean years, if you can be part of the change the reward will be that much greater.

I was drinking at Northies in Cronulla (please don't judge me it's the only pub here) and was watching the game on a 40cm with no volume whilst everybody else watched the league. I was making more noise than the combined crowd of roughly 50 people watching the big screen. I was approached by an old man who asked me how long I had been following the Dees for. He introduced himself as Toms grandfather (and no I didn't ask for ID) he was staying at a friends who also lived in Cronulla. He stayed for about two beers and before he left I asked had Tom made his mind up yet. His reply was "I'm not going to say either way but I will say this, he's sick of being called into Stynes office every week and have him play the poor health card", they're putting heaps of pressure on him to hurry up and make a decision". Then went on to say it's a life changing decision and he's only a kid blah blah blah. 

Did Stynes push the issue to far? We will never know. 

Scully would of been listening to his dad, in the end he just said what people wanted to hear to get them off his back.

Did we really expect him to stay?

 

Pretty easy to see that they (the scully's) are all tared with the same brush after a remark like that. Let alone an older person with any brains not thinking.

Money can be the start and end of everything in a greedy little world like this one. 

 

I reckon Tom looked in the mirror and asked himself "Am I as good as Judd or Ablett?"

And honestly answered "No", and then giggled to himself about all the money he'd been offered...

To paraphrase Packer "You only get one GWS (Alan Bond)"

... if he'd stayed on the huge salaries being floated we'd all have forgotten about Jack Watts and be whipping the shizen out of Tom. Was a good thing he left, even if handled in an average way.

Lets move on, Jimmy's gone, Tom's gone.
