Some serious questions asked about Paul Roos ...

There is more to the Bailey era than "we looked great in attack" or "we lacked defence". Those outlooks ignore the fact that the list was a shambles with no leaders, that we had been left behind in the massive cultural shift of the AFL which went from the 90s where success was built around individual stars who did their own thing and played like millionaires to the 2005 onwards era where it was team first, foot soldiers working hard together to a plan. We were caught 5-10 years behind that shift. Everyone else became modern professionals while we were still stuck in the 90s. We were never going to make it without instilling that change.

You wanted me to write "War and Peace" instead of sharing a quick observation ?

I'll leave that up to you.

You can care about what you want, Stu. It matters little to me ... and I suspect others.

You can also please yourself how you disseminate this information, although, you'll note its veracity as it's shared by the captain of an opposition club.

You're simply using that quote for your own purposes when it's completely not appropriate for your argument and is in a completely different context, and I suspect you know that and you're trying to cover it up with your usual little digs.

Do you honestly believe a team accused of losing games on purpose and still trying to recover from that, a team still trying to build a competitive culture, a team with a supporter base sick of losing, and a team with the most fragile confidence of any team in years has any "meaningless games"?

Did St Kilda roll over? Did Port roll over? GWS doesn't even come into your argument considering they were playing for a finals chance ("apples and oranges" I believe you used earlier).

Of course you could always listen to Pendlebury's full comments and context, as well as his coach:

I'm with you buddy, I just admired PA. Young teams, meaningless games, many a blow out. As Buckley said in his excellent presser, you need a reward for effort and many of our players haven't had that.

Let's hope they get something today.

How would winning a "meaningless game" be a reward?

Its a disappointing day and Ive sort of never played in a game like that where it is my first time ever that didnt sort of mean anything, Pendlebury told 3AW radio.

I wonder how often that attitude has affected the mindset of some of our senior players, either consciously or subliminally.

Interesting point...Week after week

Some players never play in "meaningless games"...

You've obviously never won..... anything.

I think you've actually completely misjudged the points of the person you're agreeing with and the person you're disagreeing with.

I don't think there is such a thing as a meaningless game for a club like us. Others are arguing that there is. Maybe read the rest of the thread?

Today's game may be considered 'meaningless' by some, but when the last game is finished, and we are all ruminating on the 2015 season, 7 (or possibly 8) wins reads better than 6.

At the same time, let's not obsess over the win/loss record.

The upcoming trade/draft periods are Roos' last chance to select & shape the Melbourne team that he knows will define his coaching legacy.

2016 will be the season that we use to assess his contribution.

Every win for our club is so important, meaningless game or not...we need wins to built momentum for the 2016 season...

Look at how impressive St Kilda was last night...we are in the same boat and would love to see that kind of intensity from us in our last 3 games.....the start of the 2016 season is a long way away...I'm going to be barracking for us like we still have a chance at playing finals.

Who has said it's "meaningless" ?

Who has said it's "meaningless" ?

Collingwood lose by 91 and the Giants lose by 89.

It happens to young(ish) teams when there's nothing to play for.

It's not meaningless to me, but I accept it's meaningless to some players some of the time.

Surely you're not this slow, Stu ?

Show me where I say otherwise. But be careful to use "quotes".

Truth is, Stu, you're slow on the uptake and always assuming you know what someone is thinking. It doesn't serve you well, but alas, I suspect it's terminal.

Already quoted you "ProDee" (lol). Or maybe you're too busy trying to be superior and having digs at anyone and everyone to actually read anyone's posts other than your own?

Either way, all you've done since I engaged you about the topic is try to turn the focus onto me, that says enough about how steady your footing is.

Jog on now "Pro".

"Nothing to play for" and "meaningless" are two different things.

Absolutely. I want 4 points but it means next to nothing. Particularly when CARLTANK are playing

Mad Monday is still 2 weeks away regardless

"Nothing to play for" and "meaningless" are two different things.

By definition, they're not.

You keep providing players with excuses they'll keep taking them.

I expect more for 1.5 million.

Titus O'Reilly puts it best:

A typical Paul Roos post-game media conference

Reporter: Paul, the Demons were terrible again today. Horrible in fact.

Paul Roos: Weren’t they? Just really bad. One of the worst games I’ve watched. A lot of the players just didn’t show up. I remember at Sydney we always worked really hard to play all four quarters.

Reporter: Does this change your opinion of where the team is at?

Roos: Melbourne’s players need to start thinking about their commitment. Melbourne currently aren’t a very good team. Other teams like the Bulldogs and St Kilda are just further ahead in their development.

Reporter: How’s that? Arguably you’ve had better picks and more time to improve.

Roos: That’s why Melbourne need to just keep coaching them. When I was at Sydney we had the defence in place and then we built on top of that.

Reporter: But other teams are skipping ahead of you and despite small improvements you’ve got a better list than Neeld but the growth is arguably as glacial as it was under him.

Roos: Absolutely. Melbourne as a club needs to have a good hard look at themselves. At Sydney we were always really honest. I won a premiership there.

Reporter: There were several quarters where no Melbourne players had a possession, is that a worry?

Roos: I think that’s just a reflection of where Melbourne is as a club and Melbourne fans just need to accept that. It’s a process Melbourne need to go through.

Reporter: But there were two quarters were several opposition players didn’t have anyone playing on them at all. The opposition’s worst player had three opponents on him for a quarter and still ended up with twenty possessions.

Roos: That was the players’ fault, I sent the message out but they didn’t listen.

Reporter: But isn’t that sort of your job? To make sure things like that don’t happen?

Roos: Look, the tough thing for Melbourne is that the players have already gone on their end-of-season break, mentally that is.

Reporter: To be honest, it looks like they’ve been on that for the past eight years. I guess you’ll refund all the Melbourne members for the last three games then?

Roos: Are you kidding? We’ve got to pay a pretty hefty salary

I wish someone in the media had the balls and the knowledge to call Roos out and get some real answers out of him.

On 360, Whately doesn't have the balls, and Robbo has neither.

Comments about the past or wanting the season to end are rubbish. This has been your team for 2 years now, and they are every bit as mentally weak as they were when you took over.

Of course Roos needs to get his head out of his ar$e and start to take some responsibility for the team.

But the team also need to take responsibility for their own actions. I apportion 99% of today's performance to the team

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.
