Onward and Upward we go.....

I love the fact that the main thrust of the article from Roos' point of view was to play down expectations in an attempt to take some pressure of the kid yet at the end of the article I was already fantasizing about Jesse kicking 4 or 5 in our round 1 win against the Suns and being the first rising star nomination of the year. Now that would get us up and about, not to mention add a few thousand members in the process.

Hard not to be excited

Hogan is no doubt a level or three above the other young key forwards coming through (Boyd, Patton, Daniher etc etc)

Absolutely pumped to see him ragdoll and embarass experienced veteran defenders in his first season

Whilst I agree in principle that he's a better player than these other young key forwards, I hope most also keep reasonable expectations on Hogan. The chance that he backs up a 4 goal game with another is low. He might rag doll a veteran opponent a few times, but probability shows that these veteran defenders will embarrass him a few times as well. Tom Hawkins who right now is arguably the best pure power forward (over Cloke, Schulz, Riewoldt, Tippett etc) couldn't have looked more out of his depth for long periods at the beginning of his career. Geelong had good players that took that pressure away and supporters didn't bay for blood because they were winning.

There is a fair chance Jesse won't have that luxury.

Remain optimistic but don't expect rising star nominations Round 1 and 50 goal seasons while teaching Josh Gibson a lesson. He's a mature teen with not a minute of match experience. I think he could be a once in a decade forward we have on our hands but let's be realistic.

He's not a teen. He's 20.

Once in a decade forwards tend to play pretty well from the get go. We should definitely expect down periods dependant on the quality of supply and the quality of opposition but my expectations are unashamedly high. The kid is a star and the football world are about to find out.

As I recall he spent quite a bit of time with Tom Hawkins last year as part of his overall (physical and mental) rehab from his back injury. Even if he has as little impact as Hawk did in his early years I just hope we can see some steady progress over 2015, and that he will become a dominant player in years to come.
