That's legal speak.

If you have an appeals function in any court - to use that appeals system you are essentially saying 'I want a second opinion, as that one sucked.'

    Barrett is actually correct, people power won out in this case, and so it bloody well should've.

    I hope the decision was overturned because common sense prevailed - not because the appeals board thought the decision was right but "people power" didn't.

    Hutchinson and Barrett are on the AFL's payroll. They are lefty trolls that think everything is non-subjective, that nothing can be discussed, dissected. That there is one way and if you don't fit that standard of morality or whatever then you are wrong. Barrett's "They were 100% right" comment on Viney's suspension is evident of this. He would argue that within the guidelines, he should be suspended. He can't comprehend that maybe the guidelines just don't fit in with how the common person understands the games and rules. Having a lawyer argue rules to a player who responds spontaneously to a situation is a mockery of the game itself. In society we have time to react, to consider the consequences. In Football the goal is to get the football and WIN. That is it. There are rules, yes, but there is NO rule against accidentally hurting someone. The AFL has basically legislated against accidents. It is a travesty. It's like trying to say to someone, "It is illegal to offend someone". These are laws built around human action than are spontaneous but also firmly subjective.

    Also, Hutchinson says what the AFL wants him to say. He gets pulled into line all the time for anything directly negative of the AFL or sport, and Barrett is the same. There's no doubt in my mind that every story he breaks comes directly from AFL House, which helps shape the narrative to suit the organisation.

    Someone on here referred to him as "the young lib" which is such an apt description.

    Don't read this out loud at work or in front of the children, but to paraphrase an oldie but a goodie, Damian Barrett once said to me, "I'm a country member". To which I replied, "I remember".

    Note: I've never actually met DB and don't have an opinion for or against him. He's just like many other footy journos trying to eke out a living by creating copy. And like those others, he knows that the best form of copy is the sort which introduces conflict and argument.

    Barrett needs to stick reporting about AFL and club admins, contracts and Essendon drug scandal. Leave the reporting of on field, match play, footy and players to guys who know what they are talking about. The bloke knows nothing about how to footy is and should be played.

      Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
