It wouldn't surprise me if GWS traded a player for an early pick. They had a bunch of draft picks in one draft, so trading one for an early pick spreads their age profile across a few more years.

I reckon Sam Durdin fills a real need for GWS, but agree that no.1 pick is highly likely to be in play.

Wouldn't be surprised if Collingwood threw up Ben Reid plus other assets. Sydney could also have a dip.

Might Freo be prepared to trade Fyfe for a chance at the best of the kpp's?

It depends on whether they have access to one of the top three. No doubt that if McCartin, Durdin or Wright is on offer, they'll jump at them.

After them, it's not so clear cut.

Goddard's sliding a little. He hasn't had a great championships at all, and hasn't really taken any games over, despite being highly touted for a couple of years now. He needs a lift to maintain his draft standing. After Goddard, Lever is probably the next best tall, and he's out for the year with an ACL, so some risk associated. Keitel could push himself up if he maintains form, but he isn't in that top group just yet.

Doggies need for height is well documented, but they also have a strong need for pace, as their midfield is seriously lacking runners. A lot of folk have Pickett climbing right up the ranks, I wouldn't be surprised to see Dog's take him if their pick is around number 5. If we have two picks, I think we will look very closely at him.

Knightmare's mock drafts are detailed, but I think the accuracy of that detail is highly questionable.

Yeah, he gets some of them right, but a lot of them wrong too.

Yes, I know, "you do better." I can't.

But I've gotta laugh when I see some of his player comparisons, such as Peter Wright compared to "Joe Daniher / Charlie Dixon".

It's like saying cauliflower is comparable to "chalk / cheese."

Knightmare's mock drafts are usually pretty spot on but usually the week before the draft is the time to read them once he has fully updated all his descriptions, etc.

With the amount of detail he puts in (along with a few of the others on BF) he doesnt update a lot of the player descriptions until post the combine.

I think if we finish between 15th-13th and given the need for most of the bottom teams to get a KPP (GWS - Ruck; St K - KPF; Bris - KPF; Dogs - KPF/D; Carlton - KPF) we hopefully should get the pick of the midfielders.

Like i said before, i would pick Petracca in a heartbeat, but I wouldnt be disappointed if we got Brayshaw as he is a very classy player and would be a handy addition.

Pickett is a bit of a luxury pick in my eyes as he is a line breaking HBF, while we definitely need one, my feeling is that we need to get a couple more mids first.

Also, given the evenness of this draft we could pick up a quick, outside player with our 2nd round pick (eg: Maishman, Weller, Maynard, Nelson, Clem Smith, etc) plus Billy Stretch is an outside wingman with a pretty nice turn of speed.

I know GWS have had so many picks they must be thinking needs based but would you really want to draft a tall defender/back up ruck number 1 overall? That's not a marquee position. I look at Collingwood with Frost coming off the rookie list and doing really well and even experienced defenders like Tom Lonergan, Teddy Richards, Zac Dawson and think it's more about finding some good athletes and tough guys and developing them rather than spending a number 1 pick, same with rucks.

And if they did go needs based with the ruck I'd go for Wright as he's legit ruck size and can play the second ruck/forward role.

I like the rest but I feel someone will burn down the kennel if they don't go a tall. Hrovat and Dalhaus are meant to be half forward speedsters. Johannisen from half back if he develops. Macrae isn't slow. Depends on the rest of their draft but they need some proper tall prospects.

IMO we need to be careful about unbalancing the midfield make up of our list, lest we end up with too many of the same type and same pace.

It’s a problem that I think the Bulldogs are currently facing with their midfield. A few too many in and under mids and not many genuine line breakers.

True. But we do need to keep churning our hard insiders, we can't stop because we have some which are ok, near enough, should be not good enough.

We have to keep on recruiting the best we can bring in, to keep the pressure on lifting the standards of output.

we need both, as you say hard linebreakers, & hard insiders. In fact we need more 'Hard' everywhere. Nowhere near enough. still too much 'nice as pie' yet.

Yes. It's not quite 'get them for nothing' but the bargaining position is greatly diminished. The ace in the hole for the player is to simply say I want this trade, and if you block me I'll just walk into the draft and you'll get nothing.

both I think, they need better quality leaders up in the mature age bracket, & maybe also keep slowly adding from the draft as they go along. Obviously they would have known before their first intake of recruits that many would want to go home. A part of their plan would surely embrace this in trade form.

My emphasis was more on GWS potentially losing the players for nothing if they chose to walk through the draft (main or psd).

It’s not a place any team wants to be with valued players out of contract.

Any number of scenarios could play out. It depends on whether GWS want to retain those players or would prefer to offload the pick.

The only reason they would be offloading pick 1 (notionally) for experienced players would be that they are already well stocked with key position players. If one of them agitated for a trade, and GWS was willing to dish them off, then they could draft a replacement with pick one.

Would take a larger number of assets to pry one of Cameron, Patton or Boyd out of GWS, than it would to get pick one IMO.

.... yep thats what I think, & also I reckon the thing they are shortest on is leadership & experience. Its holding the club back culturally, & the development of their players IMO, & holding onto those players which they really rate. Not enough wins happening.

If GWS were able to pickup Fyfe by trading One of the Key players, who may want to be elsewhere; & If Fyfe wants the $$$$ & the challenge... its a Win/Win.

Freo definately need to replace Pavlich & others, to increase their scoring ability.

If Cameron wants to stay up there, why hasn't he signed on Now. the Giants would have already put the pen & paper to him for the last One & a Half seasons, I'm sure.
