If Brown is not booked for that disgusting kick on Strauss, then the AFL points system is an even bigger joke than I thought.

That was as deliberate as it gets, he flicked his leg up for absolutely no reason other than to harm Strauss. Maybe he didn't mean to get him in the face, but he definitely meant to hurt him and bring him down in the contest.

I find it odd that Byrnes and Kent are singled out for poor kicking (1.5 and 2.2 respectively) yet no mention of other players who basically had no impact or were not even able to get the ball to force a scoring opportunity.

I remember neitz had a few bad nights; Holland kicked 1.5 in a game against Sydney; but at least they got the ball!

I liked Spencer above all tonight. His impact via tap outs was a major factor and Jamar might struggle to break back in this side.

thought matt Jones was quiet. Thought tappscott once again had little impact. Wonder about a number of players. Thought Dunn was ok. McKenzie better than I remembered. Grimes a few possessions but little impact. Trenners is in trouble.

Watts was Stirling, Spencer looked ok, Kent has a future with his run and carry and goals on the run, Viney deserves a rising star, Jones had another 29 and is our best player, McKenzie is best 22 and loved his goal late in the game.

We didn't have any of Dawes, Clark or Hogan which are our key forwards of 2014.

GC were down to one rotation in the last qtr which flattered our minimal loss.

Agree in part. I am concerned with the development of most of the players and hope it is rectified with this current clean up/out. But I believe Trengove is too good to stay down and will fight his way back. I hope I am correct. He needs to be freed up and allowed to attack in the middle and forward of centre where he is the most dangerous and not play too defensively for that last few games.

I just felt sorry for Watts tonight. Stayed as a loose man in defence even when the game was up for grabs and we had to bite the bullet. That was just typical Melbourne hopelessness. The result just wasn't good enough, considering how they were playing, our chances and the disposal count. Byrnes' 1.5 was disappointing, but also easy misses from Kent, Grimes and especially Fitzpatrick. Of course, we could've had a more composed kick in Watts down there.

I was pretty impressed was Troy Davis' debut, probably should've happened earlier. Was unlucky not to get a goal and contested well. Grimes and Trengove were slightly better than usual, but both not good enough late in the game. We don't have enough players who care whether we win or lose. Players who wait for another player to pick up the ball and tackle them rather than get it themselves (Trengove did this tonight). While we played decent flowing footy (not as many facepalming backwards kicks or turnovers) the desperation was simply not there late in the game. We should've won.

Don't you think that being the youngest captain EVER to play the game in the worst developed team in the comp with a major foot injury to deal with is enough pressure on the kid. There are plenty of people to blame for where we are but Trengove is not one of them.

I personally think Jack Watts is one of the most talented up and coming players in the league.

Watts is good and will only get better - and much better.

This is the issue. I'm beginning to doubt whether he can. He's been played forward of centre this year and been even more useless.

His entire game now seems to rest upon what his opponent does. It's fine to show leadership in your defensive game but offensively what is he offering us? He's a pick 2 for heaven's sake.

He's too slow for this level, and until that's rectified, he's basically in the side because we have no-one better to replace him.

There are four big positives from this season and all were evident again tonight.

1) Colin Garland has become an elite defender. Picked up Ablett when he rested forward and really annoyed him.

2) Jake Spencer is now a player - it's not just that he works hard around ground, it's because unlike Jamar and Gawn, his hitouts actually find a target quite often (34% tonight from 41 hitouts).

3) Jack Viney - for obvious reasons. He had 24 disposals tonight and if Davis hadn't wiped him out in a marking contest he probably would have got 30.

4) Dean Kent - we needed a small goalscoring forward who tackles and has pace. We drafted Byrnes for the role, but got really lucky and ended up with Kent at pick 50 or whatever who is a long-term proposition. He still hasn't cracked 20 disposals in a game yet I don't think but he had 19 tonight.

You could probably add a fifth positive in Jack Fitzpatrick saving his AFL career in the past seven games - a very handy back-up for Mitch Clark next season.

The Jordie haters need to take a step back this week too - did a great job on Ablett.

Jack Watts was very classy again, if only he could tackle, then we'd all get off his back.
