Sorry to spoil things but I couldn't help it. He wore #2 because the VFL was upset about one of our newspapers publishing the players' numbers and were worried it would affect sales of the Footy Record so they changed all the players' numbers. I reckon it cost us the flag.

By the way, RDB played in six premierships not five - 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960 and 1964. Frank "Bluey" Adams was the other Melbourne player who played in all six flag winning matches. Please make sure RDB doesn't find out you tried to short change him a flag because he would never let you forget it.

I just spoke to him earlier, I rang the club, tried to contact his mum, trying to confirm his No in that GF. I didnt want to go from memory.

So what happens, you waltz in, nail it in one, then bugger off. Anyone think you run the place. ;)

OH, you are supposed to holidaying and trying to sort out our experiments re game plans.

Gee I timed that wrong, might have stumped a few before you got here, Back to the drawing board for me.

I'll keep you in mind on the next one. Perhapsyou know what he had for breakfast that morning with Norm. :)

Seriously....

You might be right about costing us a flag i was thinking the same watching the game while confirming he wore No 2.

I deducted one off his tally for buggering off in '65. I had to change my jumper No. So stuff him. lol

PS: Did you also know a former Melbourne player was responsible or played a big part in the foundation of the Footy Record back in 1921? (5) somewhere thereabouts. He worked for the Argus. (George Cathie snr)

Thats my next Who I am. I am about to give up, I may well give the answers as well now. I'm getting creamed here. :)

A new one tomorrow *sigh* yes you can still have a shot at it.

May I suggest you go back a little Deevoted, we had a few hundred Demons play between 1897 and 1950 - that may pull a few up short.

I'm trying to dig out the "Footy Record" teamsheet for the 1858 game V Geelong lol

Deevoted, another forum i frequent (a history one) often have quizzes

The winning poster gets to pose the next quiz

If he declines the originator offers a new one

adds a bit of variety

just a thought if you get stumped coming up with new ones

I thought this over, and came up with an alternative.

If anyone wants the quiz chair for the week, and think they can stump the masses , send me a PM for details.

Posting randomly will only be confusing for all. You only need to put together min of 5 players with clues for each.

Next in the hot seat is "red and blue forever" he will be hosting, gives me a chance to recharge the batteries.

That is a very broad / vague clue I gave (I had too)

Good to see some having a punt.

NO correct guess as yet.

If we get into round 2, the prize money doubles. I'll post the 2nd clue (if required) early mid Sat.

Jack, I looked at the match scores of the two GF that Barassi lost 1954 and 1958. According to their stats Barass wore his usual number #31 as did all the other players. I went to both GF in question and cannot remember the numbers being switched. Please enlighten me here. I am assuming (maybe wrongly) that it was a Melbourne GF loss.

Ivor Warne-Smith?

Bobby it is a fact, just as Jack explained. The 1958 GF the players wore different numbers. Before I did the clues for the Barassi quiz, I knew he wasnt wearing his usual 31. I would have put money on him wearing No2, only because I related that to Robbie,so it stuck.

I have been checking my facts, beforehand, for clues, made the odd slipup (only human). I checked various places to confirm what number he wore.

None I checked backed up the evidence. The youtube clip didnt show enough for me to use,if my clue was disputed,I had to drag out a video tape of

the game (1958 GF). He is there, for all to see, wearing number 2.

The only thing I was dark on :) I reckon I had you blokes on that, before Jack deflated my tyres.

Just on the subject that Jack touched on, the then VFL made us change numbers, the karma / awe of the team may have been effected.

(and the fact the filth went the knuckle tor the best part of a 1/2 of footy,to unsettle us)

So really reading between Jacks; lines, he is still dirty on it! 60+ years on,and they are still at it, trying to stitch us up.

edit: fixed a typo

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
