Welcome AD - Why on earth would you choose MFC as your team? Most of us have the misfortune to have been born with the curse. Hang tough we'll come good one day.

I'm always curious as to how/why people support the team they do - can you give us a brief story about how/why AD?

I talked about it in another thread, but basically, I'd been watching AFL on and off for a few years but didn't have anyone I supported. At the time I was a big fan of Hamish and Andy, i'd get up every morning an hour earlier than I had to and listen to a podcast of their show (back when they did a show every day) I had been feeling like it was time to pick a team, and had started looking at different teams, I hadn't really looked into Melbourne then one day I found out Hamish supported the Dees, so I thought i'd read up on them. I really loved what I learned about the club, I read a lot about Jim Stynes, and Ron Barassi, so then I started watching them play and instantly fell in love with Liam Jurrah. His playing style was so exciting and fun to watch. So, I decided the Dees would be my team. Got up at 3 am to watch my first game as a Demons fan, and watched them get clobbered by West Coast last season. Around the same time, I sent an email to the club asking a question about something, and didn't hear back from them till just last month. When they replied, the woman apologized for being so slow to get back to me, and said the club would like to send me an autographed team picture (which is now proudly hanging in my apartment.)

Also on another AFL forum I go to I posted that story about the club sending me that picture and three or four other people told me stories about how the Demons really treat their fans well, and shared some really cool stories about the club going above and beyond in being good to fans.

I know we had a horrible season, and will probably have another hard season next year, but i'm hooked. They're my team and dammit I love them.

Besides, i'd rather support a [censored] team that I love and have reasons to support, than Collingwood, Essendon, or Carlton. I like knowing I have reasons why I'm a Deemons fan, and didn't just pick a club because they're good.

Spoken like a real demon tragic - and an astute one at that! Go DEES

I have to ask. Given that you've been with us for a relatively short period, what was it that made you decide to follow the Demons? We've been pretty awful the last few years, we've had terrible press and even many of our own supporters can't see anything positive right now.

A lot of it was the history of the club, and when I started looking into the team, I loved watching Liam Jurrah. Also a big part of me becoming a fan was reading and learning about Jim Stynes. The more I learned about the club, i just really grew to love the team. And I'm fairly optimistic for the future. I think we may have a few more rough seasons but I definitely think we're on the rise.

Actually reminds me a lot of my favorite MLB team. Last season, they nearly filed for bankruptcy, had a horrible owner, who basically ran one of the biggest franchises into the ground (I'm a LA Dodgers fan if anyone cares) But they made a few good off season signing, got a new owner, and are now actually having a decent season. I don't think the Demons will be as quick of a turn around but I really think it isn't too far off. If Trengove can adjust and play like he had in the past, and Watts continues to develop, and we get a few signings during the trade period and draft well I think we'll see an improvement next season. But maybe i'm just delusional and a glutton for punishment.

Welcome aboard. Some people get into S&M, some run marathons, some flail themselves with thorn bushes. We follow MFC.

I'm gonna call it.

I don't think you're based in the States.

Why don't you think I am? Lived here for my whole life. Although, not gonna lie, there's part of me that wishes I wasn't an American. haha

We've got plenty of room here! We need to fill the seats. Move here and make another family! Great weather, good people. Or just come for a holiday.

Just an inkling...

Anyway, my brother-in-law lives and works in State College, PA. Been over there for 12 years now. He raves about American Football. I still struggle to get my head around it. I'm trying to learn by watching the lingerie football league. My missus hardly approves.

NFL is by far and away the second best team sport in the world only second to Aussie Rules and it is a very close second at that (NBA basketball would be the only other one I rate and can watch). I've been following the NY Jets for the past couple of seasons and have a soft spot for the Detroit Lions as well can't wait til the new season kicks off now the Demons season is over.

I'm an American fan of the Demons. Been a fan of the Dees for two years now, and a fan of AFL for probably around 4 years, but didn't have a favorite team the first few seasons and only occasionally watched games.

Boy did you pick the wrong team!

DONT buy a lottery ticket.. in fact, stay indoors, curl up in a corner somewhere..

Seriouly though, most of us are 'born' into the Demon family - meaning mum or dad.. or uncle takes along to games and sucks us in..

You can still make it out alive! go..

Go now, while you still have a sense of happiness..

Really?

i cant think of ANY american sport thats not stop-start, drug riddled, plain boring or pre-scripted crap.. like soccer is for europe.

Its no wonder the man is checking out our great game over here..

EDIT: if youre looking for a good game to watch American Demon,

'Queens birthday (12th june) 2006, Vs Collingwood' - the most recent, great performance by a MFC team.

I think this is my que to post something!I've been a lurker for the past few months but i've been only following AFL since last year so my knowledge of the sport wouldn't be that advanced although i have enough knowledge to know that Carlton Essendon Collingwood and Hawthorn are not worthy of my support!I wanted to support a Melbourne based team so the club that bears the citys name was the obvious choice. It's A Grand Old flag is by far the best theme song in the afl and a lot of people in Ireland would have a soft spot for Melbourne FC because of Jim Stynes and Sean Wight.I bought the illustrated history of Melbourne as a birthday present and i really enjoyed reading about the time when the dees where known as the fuschias to the Checker Hughes and Norm Smith era's.This was a tough season but Dean Bailey left a very poor setup behind him so i'll only start judging Mark Neeld from next year onwards.Im actually hoping for a finals push if the right draft picks are bought in.Anyway that's my story and as for this talk about this club standing for nothing.Jim Stynes helped to clear this clubs debt while he was dying from cancer. If Jim felt it worthy to put this club priorities before his health then this club must stand for something.btw Wouldn't it be great to win the 13th flag for Jim and Troy Broadbridge.I don't know when that will happen but i do know that the dees time will come.

haha State College is pretty crazy when it comes to a love of Football (especially college football) I like the NFL, but i think AFL is so much more fun to watch. It's a lot more exciting and entertaining to me.

Since I started following the game in 2005, I liked the Panthers Stevie Smith, I was into them for a bit and then took interest in the Colts. Got a friend from Mount Chester living in Oz who follows the Raiders.

I just like watching the game.

Cant say I am a fan of a particular team. I struggle to pick one!

I know a number of MFC fans in the states. They try to watch as many games as possible.

I support Arizona Cardinals - also rebuilding... I reckon larry Fitzgerald would be a good pick up for the dees! :)

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
