Did other Demonlanders hear the guy ring up ABC and SEN about his "goal targets", which he's obviously involved in flogging.? I think they're some sort of target you string up between the posts, and players actually aim at IT rather than trying to aim between posts.

Doesn't sound too impressive, BUT his sales pitch did !

He claimed they presented it to about 8 AFL Clubs as a training aid. Only one club, Sydney, took it up.

Statistically they have changed from by far the least accurate team in the AFL to easily the best.

If there's any truth in it, should we give it a go?

Kicking accuracy is of paramount importance. eg. I reckon we'd have given Collingwood a good run if we hadn't missed 3 or 4 easy ones in Q1.

I wonder if A Everett uses it a lot. What a top kick under pressure for the winner v. Geelong.! Tommy Hawkins and Jeremy Howe need something different in their practice routines.

How about drafting players with elite kicking ability, instead of drafting basketballers and trying to turn them into footballers.....

funny in a way..... way back when a kid and we had VFL players come round to give clinics I was giving some coaching by a real hack of a hawk...some wally from Tassie.....didnt have a clue this bloke -_-:) His very sage advice was never really to consider the sticks.. You picked out someone...or something...and aim at it. The mind plays trciks...give it ANY largesse of ...'between this post and that one" and it will use up ALL the target..and more.. Give it a specific..and the foot often guides to it.,..amazing really.

Wonder what ever happend to that bloke ...lol

So according to you, Blokes like Howe and Hawkins shouldn't be drafted!?

People seem to amaze me around here when they can't understand a bit of humour....even after using an emotion!

Goal kicking is the one of those things you can't really just practice over and over and over again, and expect to see results. Kicking goals at training is a lot different to kicking goals in match, where you're being watched by thousands of people and the result of the kick is actually relevant. So much of a good technique is fueled between the ears.

apparently he was to be moved to CHF when/if a certain deity came to hawthorn

he also always kicked for goal with a flat punt (not torp) instead of a drop punt

best FF ever, but not as entertaining as some

and the advice of picking out something beyond the goals was common advice in those days

Despite this, practice appears to have made a dramatic difference to the Swans'' goal-kicking accuracy.

Haha only reason I knew that was because he used to take us for skills lessons in Tas :)

we were both fortunate then :)

Just to bore you all & a bit of fun....

One of my favourites - Jack Watts, beautiful kick of the footy.

Watts averages 19.7 disposals a game this year, only playing 74% gametime, down 10% on last year. Disposal efficiency in 2012 - 79%, career 75.1%. Can kick a footy the boy. However his goal kicking accuracy is interestingly 67% and from memory a lot of these shots have been fairly easy set shots over the last 4 years.

Stef Martins disposal efficiency this year is well down on previous years at 60%. With a career goal kicking accuracy of 58%.

Jeremy Howe disposal efficiency is 67%, goal kicking 58% over his career.

Tom Hawkins disposal efficience 69.1%, goal kicking 61.5%.The goalkicking aid sounds like it would help, but I am of the opinion that sport is a lot to do with between the ears.

Howe does it work, this goal kicking aid? Is it some sort of circle that can be maneuvered into different set positions between the posts? Perhaps we could make our own using a certain ex draftees head....or his dads for that matter.

Forgetting the GWS game, I think we should concentrate on getting it into our forward 50 before investing in this aid!!! B)

As has been alluded to. Best AID is a ggod coach ...to work on the space between ears.....and practice practice practice . Simple as.

Yeah it doesn't matter if you kick straight.....as long as you get it into the forward 50!!!

I'm pretty sure I meant focus on getting the bloody ball in their first - then kick straight.....After all you are talking about goal kicking!

I was a kid growing up in Tgon and had freinds who lived overlooking the local general store servo at tyers where we used to watch the kid ther kicking the footy at the upstanding brick Chimney. When he hit it he would sour for the mark on the rebound and if he missed he had to run round the house to pick up the ball. He did this for hours and we insignificant sportspeople would be bemused and incredulous at his persistence.

I even offered to take him to the tennis courts (my sport)to relieve the boredom.

He thrashed me at Tennis after a bit of practice and became a pretty good footballer

Name Kelvin Templeton.

Maybe practice does help?

Practice doesn't help ?

Ya having a lend of me surely.

Anything is worth practising if you want to make it second nature .

Bradman...Woods... Charlton....Beckam....and the list goes on !!!

Makes sense. Hard to simulate match pressure in training obviously though. Is it Cloke that listens to crowd noise in his earphones while practising his set shots, and went from a terrible kick for goal to a quite decent one.

The whole point of practice is to build a memory of an action thereby negating the necessity to invent something at the occasion of needing it. I.e you DO it... You dont overthink it.

I wouldn't dare put myself in anyones class but i spent hours at parks ... Throwing balls along the ground practising picking it up and kicking from the dead pocket....or drpping itonto the square from a flank etc. It does pay off. You just KNOW you can do it. So even under pressure you can back yourself in. This is especially true in home surroundings but it pays off overall for anywhere. You get comfortable with your own actions. Id be far from the only one to have done this. Im sure many of you reading will have also .

As to kicking aids we had good ol garbage bins and sometimes a cpl holding a hoola hoop on the goal line ( kid you not )

It all works :)

No good -- I think one needs a small target

I don't know how the "Goal-kicker Target" works. I think it's a round target strung up halfway up the posts.

I was hoping a Demonlander might know something about it, to inform me.

If the stats about Sydney are true, it might be worth looking into.
