Harley Bennell

Wouldn't even waste our time asking.

No chance.

Jamie and Harley are distant relatives at best. I believe Jamie doesnt even know him

Geez everyone froths after a couple of good games

Let's see him do it for the next couple of years before he becomes a love child (not go at OP, more at the media drool)

Anyway, no chance, he's a WA boy who was heavily rumoured to be homesick last year - doubt there'd be a chance to entice him to Vic

It's not just a couple of games - it's the way he handles the footy, his skills, the way he effortlessly glides over the field, and the way he plays like Jurrah with intensity (but without the high marking).

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan, but I would like to see him string together a few more of those performances

Wow. Glad you are not against him.

Bennell oozes class from the start. The media and watchers are right to be excited by him.

GC will keep him. They will move heaven and earth to do so.

Me too, but I don't have any doubt that he will.

He is now living with K Hunt and his girlfriend, and has been saying he wants to be at the club for the next decade.

After a desperately homesick first year where he struggled, they have made some significant ground with him.

Is there a slight chance we could target this kid if Dangerfield is out of reach? With Jamie Bennell in the side and the desperate need for a player of Harleys caliber. Could rotate through the mid / forward

What would be his motivation for leaving? I don't reckon a distant cousin he's never met would be much of a drawcard.

It's okay to "dare to dream" but I wish we'd stick to exploring options that are actually plausible.

I'm sure I've heard this sort of statement made before .

Then we landed Clarke.

CLARK

I think Clark was just looking for an excuse to leave Brisbane and the "go home" thing sounded like a good one. Once again, the player has to actually want to leave before he'll start entertaining offers, so I ask again, what's Bennell's motivation to leave?

I'm sure I've heard this sort of statement made before .

I was actually going to mention that in my post, but thought against it

With Clark - he predominately wanted out of QLD AND we were able to throw a massive offer at him to entice him over

What would we be able to offer Bennell?

He's guaranteed a lot of game time, he's going through with a group all his age, with a chance to build something....we have little to offer him

Clark's motivation to leave was family - hence go back to Perth. He wanted to be closer to his as relatives to help him look after his kid. We simply offered him an alternative way to be close to family - a good pay packet and only travel 4 times a year instead of 10 means he can fly some family over and not spend too much time on the road. Plus with all of September off most years he'll get plenty of time in Perth.

Now what do we have to offer Bennell that Gold Coast doesn't? Nothing. Can we convince him that moving to Melbourne is just as good as moving to Perth in terms of home sickness, I doubt it.

How about one and a bit good seasons? And as far as the homesick WA boy argument goes... wasn't Clark a homesick WA boy?

Edit: ok, on reading a few comments saying Clark was not homesick, he was still convinced he could manage his "family reasons" without returning to WA... money can cure all kinds of ailments.

I wouldn't say he's had a good one and bit good seasons yet

He was ok without being great last year and needs to string a few more together IMO (not doubting his talent, I think he'll be a great player but he's not get)

The question remains....what could we offer Bennell that he isn't going to get at the Gold Coast?

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
