2011 Player Review - # 26 Robert Campbell ®

Featured Replies

The former Hawthorn premiership ruckman had a late start to the season due to lingering Achilles tendon problems and only came along slowly during the season. However, by the end of the year, Campbell was starting to show some glimpses of the form that made him such a valuable big man with the Hawks.

With such a shallow draft you would think there is an outside chance of him playing on. Didn't impress me, but I hear good things about his character which always helps at an emerging club like ours.

Couldnt really hurt to retain him as a rookie id have thought.

Nothing much to say -- certainly no chance of squeezing him into a crowded list with many ruck back up options, especially with the addition of Clarke.

If possible though, retention as a rookie would be as good as we could possibly offer him.

Given we now have Jamar, Martin, Clark, Gawn and Spencer....Campbell will be lucky to get a rookie contract

I think that's very true Rhino. On a slightly different tack, I have been wondering given the positive role Robbie has apparently played with our young ruckmen in 2011, and his impressive character, whether there might be a part-time ruck coaching spot available for him at Melbourne. As far as I can recall we don't have anyone assigned to that specialist job in the new set-up.

This Martin came on in leaps and bounds this season, Gawn also looked good, he wouldnt get paid much on the rookie list anyway, isnt Meeson a part time ruck coach or something though?

And he is meant to be good at this, or was when he was injured haha

Would have been a great story if he got his body right but he still hasn't.

Jamar, Clark, Martin, Spencer, Gawn, Fitzpatrick.

I think it's time to use this rookie selection on someone else.

Farewell Robert. All the best

Would like to think there was something for him to do at the club. Time will tell.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
