I think I have finally got you know who out of my mind. Just another ex MFC player, but unlike the others, with no redeeming features or part of our history. I "will" move on.

    10 days very soon. More names being thrown up and some training with us. Waylen, Marlen, Aaron, Freddie, Fletcher, Jai and let's not forget Tom. It really is an interesting draft.

    I think there's a fair amount of consensus around here that the rookie draft is more exciting and far more interesting than the national draft or the PSD and I think it should be promoted as such.

    How about us lobbying the AFL to become a bit innovative and to upgrade the image of the rookie draft so that it's actually held before the national draft?

    That way, the prestige of being the #1 national draft pick would be diminished and we probably would be spared some of those interminable daily self-serving propaganda pieces about He Who Must Not Be Mentioned fed to the media by the AFL and GWS desperate to improve the kid's image before he's nemed captain or vice captain (:lol:) of the Giants.

    I think our very own Jordie McKenzie is a past #1 rookie selection and that's the image the game should be projecting. He's a nice, wholesome young lad. Honest and fiercely loyal to his club and teammates. The type of bloke you want to have with you in the trenches.

    How many days to go?

    Ten?

    It's worth the wait (I hope you haven't got it wrong this time Redleg)!

    Couldn't agree more on Jordie. A top kid and one of my favourites. goes hard and never stops. Met him with you at a function and ever since, even after training he will come over and say hi.

    He's shown some real character hasn't he. Didn't he win some sort of clubman award? And from memory didn't he at one stage agree to stay on as a rookie, even though he had been offered a contract at the Crows.

    The rookie draft certainly has been good to us.

    Lawrence and Spencer still unproved. So glad you mentioned Troy Broadbridge. We should all not forget him as sometimes happens with busy lives. He was a lovely bloke and taken much too early. He was also a pretty handy footballer and popular clubman and no doubt would have played a lot more footy for us. He is sadly missed by all his family and friends and Dees supporters.

    9 days from Sunday.

    Now that it's really 9 days to go (and I'm assuming Redleg hasn't stuffed up his dates this time), I can let everyone in on the name of the ideal replacement for He Who Must Not Be Mentioned - SULLY LOOKS TO ROOKIE DRAFT

    Over the past two months I've been searching in vain for the right player to fit the mood of the person described in the song made famous by Adele.

    With this bloke, I think I've finally found the closest fit to that "Someone Like You" character.

    Went for a walk wearing a MFC cap and 3 people asked me how we would go next year. Then discussed the list. Seems to be more Dees fans around now, than a few years ago.

    Can't imagine Sheedy going beyond one year as Coach at GWS. They seem light on for Coaches and training grounds. While they wanted a lot of publicity which they got, most of it is bad. Not sure this is the way the AFL saw the club starting.

    I have made a habit of picking one player each year that I see as a big improver. Have got it right most times with the odd failure. This year I am going to stick my neck out and go with a rookie Michael Evans. I also have high hopes, unlike others, for a big improvement in Jack Fitzpatrick.

    I think you have a lot better chance with Fitzpatrick than Evans.

    Did not think Evans showed much last year, but I have been seriously wrong on a number of occasions.

    I thought Evans first game, which I saw on replay, as I was away, was fantastic. He found a lot of the footy and for an inexperienced kid, without a full pre season and not much footy the year before, I thought that game showed his talent. Obviously they all can't make it but I am happy to follow his progress this year.

    Like OD, I havn't been totally convinced by Evans. He certainly showed us that he can get the ball, but can he use it (?) that's my question. I know a few people at the Club are quite positive however. My tips are Tomy Mac (based on the training reports) with Kel Lawrence as a 'smokey'. We are screaming out for a small crumbing forward with pace and decent tackling skills, and it wouldn't surprise me if he's getting games by the end of 2012.

    theres alot of chatter on here about lawrence on here, where does the excitement come from? can't really

    remember seeing his name in the best for casey, he's not another 180-190cm skinny "strong overhead" type is he?

    Just a gut feeling on my part rolly. Kel had several very strong games for Casey 2's iirc, plus he has shown glimpses in Casey ones indicating that he might have what it takes. He is a highly skilled player with a bit of 'x factor', but he needs to develop an AFL body and to build his consistency. 2011 was his first year on our rookie list, and he had the lightest possible pre season. In addition, he suffered very bad home sickness during the year. If he can become comfortable with life in Melbourne, and focus on footy, he might become the crumbing small forward that imo, we really need, especially now that we look like having have a tall forward set-up.

    Played a lot of cricket at 2 cricket clubs - at one I was known as "Nuggets" after the great Keith "Nugget" Miller - somebody added an "s" and it stuck ! Btw It had nothing to do with rivaling his cricket ability ! And at the other club I was known as "Macca" - most people I know call me that . When I played footy I had various nicknames but "You" and "Mate" figured predominantly in the early days !

    I'm figuring yours is self explanatory yeah ?

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

    • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
