Mental Toughness

This area of the MFC has always been an issue which continues to raise its ugly head. I saw it in the 80s with Northeys sides,in the 90s with Balme & also the 2000s with Daniher. They all have the same common theme start playing well,they would always drop games to just miss out making top 4 & missing out on double chances. Daniher had up & down years with the same list of players. What I saw on Friday night after beating Essendon was all this back slapping, well done,celebrations etc. Were was the senior leadership on the feild to pull in all the players & say that enjoy the moment but this is the standard we must play at every time wepull on the jumper!

I was not expecting to win against the filth who are are premiership favourites but it seems that the palyers mental toughness to follow up from last week goes missing. Cant blame the kids but many experience players should be ashamed! Is it the coaching? game plan? Bailey has had 4 yrs to implement a culture of 1 percentes, in this he has failed & the MFC cannot afford to allow this culture to continue with the likes of Trengove,Gysberts,Scully,Taspcott,Gawn or we will have another generation of players making finals but not going all the way!

Our leaders are still in the nursery, and it will be a few more seasons before they can show the way.

All other parts of the club are changing, as is the culture............just have to be patient for it on the field.

I have always seen this problem too. I've always kind of compared us to North. Their top 6 players had a real crack each week and always maintained a pretty good standard. I think of guys like Harvey, Archer, Grant etc, these players would always pull the others through and you could never accuse them of not having a crack, when they were beaten, they were just simply beaten by better teams (majority of the time). This has somewhat changed recently though and they are starting to feel the effects more when players like Harvey have an off day.

When it comes to us though, its always seemed to be that our top 6 are our most inconsistent. This is whats contributed to our roller coaster nature. When our top are playing well and having a dip, the rest of the team is and we look unbeatable, when they aren't we make games look unwinnable. It seems funny this year that our younger players seem to be our most consistent whilst our top players seem to still be our most inconsistent. When this so called cream does drop away, we fall away badly. Similar comparisons this year with the saints, their top 6 have fallen away and so have they, last few years though, they were always in their best players. When have our top 6 players been consistent?

By our top 6, this doesnt always mean our 6 best, but I dunno, our 6 leaders.

Until we can address this leadership (mental) issue, which filters down through the rest of the group, we will go nowhere, doesnt matter who the coach is.

I knew this old chest nut would come up this week...And why not it's true.

It's all very well putting on a big show...Bringing out the Cups, Dancing girls Bugles & Premiership videos of yester year (which was great i must say) But once the siren goes and we play the way we did yesterday....6 goals on a dry sunny day...That's what gets remembered.

Sadly as of june 13 2011...we are still mentally weak.

Maybe Craig Bellamy and Bails could swap for a few months...Melbourne Storm are Tough, and last night were full of kids.
