The Tom Scully Saga

Featured Replies

This thread has gone on for way too long - if Scully wants to continue to play for MFC he should sort it out now.

Personally, I subscribe to the view that a team of players agree to stay together and probably accept less individual payment than they could achieve elsewhere - it's a small individual price to pay for continued success and that inner glow of loyal satisfaction, especially given the relatively high wages paid to footballers these days.

I hope Scully stays - I also hope the rest of our young guns stay and enjoy the benefits of loyalty which can't be measured in dollars.

That's how we were successful in the 50's - Jim Cardwell and Norm Smith would be proud of such players.

Too right. It's why a Brian Dixon or a Ron Barrassi or a Hassa Mann can walk into the MFC now and still be revered as a champion 50 years after they left the game.

Money and playing in front of 8000 disinterested rugby followers can't buy that. Once you're career's finished up there, goodbye and we'll try to remember your name at the 10 year reunion.

How utterly hollow.

Ease up fellas, I am not liking where the sentiments of this post are headed. What we do know is that Scully is currently a dee and is playing as hard as he ever has so he deserves our support. There are a number of players currently playing whose contracts finish at the end of the year and who, in all likelihood will negotiate new contracts at the end of the season yet these players are not attracting our angst. I for one would think that Sylvia is just as much an integral member of the side as Scully, their contract status remain the same yet Col is not attracting any negative comments.

Scully will stay or he will go, it will not be the end of the club. I feel that moderators should end this thread simply for the fact that it is inflaming and already tense situation and I would hate for any of this anger to have an impact on the club. Yes, it is a frustrating situation but we have to sit back and trust the footy admin to get the job done.

Martin is easily the pick of the draft right now. This may change, but right now he is out in front.

Jordie will tear him a new one come Saturday.

Setting salaries on the basis of potential is a disaster nd the reason there is a set scale of salaries for players in their first two years.

I'm beginning to accept the balances of both results here.

Scully stays, we have an extra star player with us, and it says all sorts of good things about our club. However, he'd probably cost 600k a season and seriously screw with our carefully managed salary cap, which in the end could cost us other players right as we're peaking.

Sculy goes, we probably get two first round picks which we can use in any of the ext five drafts, letting us watch the development of our current list and boost our stocks to correct any deficiencies and to maintan a generation of playing momentum, al while saving a whole pile of salary cap space. Plus, we become the only club to get good crowds and coverage against GWS.

I met a nice girl once, really wanted to marry her so I says to her you either marry me now or nick off.

You gotta be strong and forceful, and if you someone won't do what you want them to you gotta make em, yeah.

Interesting that the mods on Demonology have pulled the pin on Scully talk. Probably a good idea. I must say that all this talk is making me unhappy and there's not a damned thing we can do to effect the outcome.

Sure. there is no way he should be over paid, but without him our midfield will suffer straight away.

Most kids of his age would be absolutely stoked to be seen to be an integral part of an AFL club's future, but this seems almost irrelevant to Scully. I find it wholly bizarre that he seems, almost wilfully, to ignore what the club and its supporters would love him to do. At his age, such discipline and lack of impressionability is almost pathologically weird.

Here, here Ron. Very well said. I couldn't agree more. We are learning a lot about Tom's priorities and clearly the club is not one of them.

This is gettin tragic

I think the attacks and questions over the integrity of one of the members of our football team have gone on long enough.

We on Demonland are supporters of the Melbourne Football Club, many of the posts on this issue have been ridiculous, ill conceived and potentially destructive. I support the club's stance on this issue and believe they are handling it in the best interests of the future of the club.

Any post which attacks the integrity of Tom Scully or has any such inference will be deleted. Unsubstantiated rumours will also be deleted and members banned if those rumours are found to be false. Any person inciting any unsportsmanlike or threatening gestures towards Tom Scully will also be banned.

Please keep this discussion on track in the interests of the club, the player/s and the general sanity of the Demonland community.

Agreed until there is evidence that he has changed his mind or is going to sign. All it does is anger supporters and we are running the risk of people booing and treating him with distain. The reason it continues to be an issue is because of topics like these. If you read any article regarding Tom Scully it always starts with "worried" or "angry" supporters, don't think jurnos don't read this because if they didn't they wouldn't be doing there job properly.. If your over 15 I recommend to just stay away and be patient. It is up to both the club and player. Not much us supporters can do but support both Tom and the club. Geelongs supporters did everything they could to try and keep Garry Ablett that did absolutely nothing

I don't see a Colin Sylvia Thread regarding the same matter and atm he is by far a better player then young Tom. At least Tom has said he wishes to organize his contract at years end. Has Colin?

This has gone past tragedy and into farce.Get a grip on yourself freaky Dees .Someone even insisted he come out and make another statement for the sake of this thread .Tommy we beg you ,please end the thread....

gOOD and while you're at it I hope you stop posts which are character attacks on Matthew Bate, Lynden Dunn and Cale Morton who constantly cop far worse on this site and demonology than Tom ever has. There is a double standard here. A comment suggesting a player is looking for the $$$ is an attack on their integrity, whilst attacks questioning the courage and personal traits of "LESSER PLAYERS" goes on unabated here and on demonology.

hAA. My first censored post in prob. ten years on this site. Meanwhile you allow posters to throw any rubbish at a number of Melbourne players (Morton, Bate, Dunn for example) and hit the dump button when this pointed out to you.

hahah leave Tom alone bag Sylvia instead! This thread keeps on giving!

If you can't see the difference between commenting on an observed football situation and attacks on a players integrity fonded on RUMOURS then the problem isn't mine.

Have a go at Scully's kicking if you wish, I don't think it is reasonable to attack the integrity of one of our own. Some of the posts that have been deleted have been appalling and I won't repeat them.

If you have a problem with protecting the interests of our club maybe you should question your own loyalties?

Please don't kill any semblance of intellectual integrity that this site may have preserved to date.

It's this type of reaction that killed Demonology a few years back.

You clearly have many genuinely concerned posters reading this loop - I don't expect making it a one way street will do anyone any favours, including the club we all support.

Just my view though. Feel free to censor it as you see fit.

FELLOW DEMONS.... WE NEED TO MOVE ON FROM THE SCULLY SAGA!! I KNOW ITS HARD TO THINK OF LIFE WITHOUT SCULLY, BUT THE MFC WILL STILL BE AS STRONG AND UNITED AS EVER....ONE PLAYER DOESNT MAKE A FOOTBALL CLUB!!! ESPECIALLY THE OLDEST CLUB IN THE WORLD.. IF SCULLY GOES TO GWS SO BE IT.. LETS ENJOY 2011 GO DEES

this is my first post on here, and all i can say is at this stage i feel tom will make the right choice we have made it very clear the direction the club is going in and i hope tom wants to be a part of that. Either way we have a very talented bunch of kids and i'm sure we can succeed with our without him.

Not my intention at all just saying Tom should be treated the same was as Sylvia. Of course GWS would want him. Although I'm sure if we sign Tom they will be more then happy to have a crack at Sylvia.

Agree.

From my perspective, the issue is not so much Tom Scully - but the thought that we were gifted picks 1 and 2 and may not ultimately get the benefit of what that could potentially have delivered us.

And, for what it's worth, it is a big issue. Objectively. Only earlier tonight on 'On The Couch' did Roos, Healy and Sheahan raise it once again. I hope Scully was listening, because Roos thinks his future should be well and truly at the Demons.

Look, I presume you are targetting comments such as Red n Blue Flame which I agree shouldn't be put up without foundation. Come on, a comment on a player's kicking!!! you must be joking, on what basis did you allow years of dribble about Cameron Bruce. all I am saying is be consistent. I prob. go back longer than you and not only remember the Barassi defection but the way supporters were ambushed with the sudden announcement he was going to Carlton. It was presented to the public as a fait accompli, and this secrecy was a key ingredient in getting Barassi over the line. who knows if the internet had existed in the second half of '64 the supporter base may have persuaded Ron to stay and history may have been different.

+1 Censorship is a slippery slope. You should be able to express a negative view (without going over the top), however unpalatable it may be others.

Dandeeman, would you please explain your comment of 09.31pm - the english is strange, but maybe I'm just not very bright.

  • GAMEDAY: Essendon

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
