Inquiry into injuries

Featured Replies

I think Bail's occurred in the North match (debacle) landed heavily on his knee and his knee sorted dug into the turf, thereby giving it a bit of a wrench.

Admittedly I was at work so I didn't see it.

I seem to recall making a thread exactly like this a couple of weeks ago. I was shouted down by some know-alls and the thread was locked by a moderator.

'Just luck' they said, yeah two-thirds of your side on the pine, sure it is

so you're an injury list sceptic then???

reckon we've just been unlucky, i for one cant spot any trends.

I'm not saying all the injuries are one way or the other, but I have heard rumours about the Scully injury, certainly the Tapscott injury may be related to our management, and without doubt some of last year's injuries were.

it's not just the fact that THIS season has been somewhat record-breaking in terms of injury, but the 3 or 4 before that sucked too. How anyone can ignore this and put it down to bad luck is beyond me

I seem to recall during preseason many players not training at odd intervals, and it causing panic amongst some of the supporters.

This was a result of the fitness staff managing the loads of players, to prevent injuries as a result of high training loads.

I honestly think a lot of our injuries are the results of collisions, or are immeasurable, such as Grimes navicular stress fracture or hot spot or whatever it is.

It is simply wrong to try to blame these on the club, as they cannot be foreseen or prevented.

& as an aside, my girlfriend is actually interviewing someone from the AFL tomorrow on a topic which loosely relates to this one.

I've given her a handful of questions to ask purely for my indulgence, in regards to injuries and the impact of the substitute.

If anything semi-interesting comes out of it, I'll post it here in this thread.

Being the AFL, chances are it will be played with a straight bat and of no interest.

well what are the rumours about scullys knee??? That he had the injury prior to drafting, got thru his first year, 2nd pre season it flared up given his manic training, rested scully, brought him back for trial match, flared again, conservative approach 10 to 12 weeks later he is back playing, typical bone stress injury...lets hear the rumours. Tapscott's injury maybe related to our management, he did his hammy trying to kick 60m. How many hammy's has tapscott done whilst at Melbourne??? Zero.

Without doubt some of last year's injuries were. Care to be specific??? Do you actually read your posts prior to posting. Look if there is a problem with our management of injuries then please provide specific examples and reasons why you have reached your conclusion. Dont post baseless wide ranging crap.

Who, what, where and when???

Specifics would be handy just so we could actually determine if there is a trend or not. furthermore, I am hoping you have a sports science, medical background and access to players preparations, training loads etc so you will be able to determine whether the fitness/medical staff have contributed to the high number of injuries. Prior to the Adelaide match we had the shortest injury list in the AFL, where was your post then???

Could it be a co-incidence that all these injuries have happened after the Adeliade game? For a long time it appears we have been in cruise control with low intensity performances. Only from the Adelaide game on we actually tried playing as we should. Our preseason and early games have not been to AFL intensity as required. Same as for most of last year and the previous couple of years. For too long we've been mollycoddled with this "Development" phase. Looks like we've been playing in the VFL seconds rather than in an elite comp. And now we are falling over like nine pins.

I am surprised no one has blamed the Bohdan B for all this. He normally cops a serve from suspicious posters.

No. Because we also had a raft of injuries during the pre season.

We have also had a terrible run of injuries over the past 3 seasons while we have been in your "development" phase.

But as always never let the facts get in the way ADC.

The only fact that I'm concerned about is our crappiness. We've been and still are crap and inept and none of your excuses and dyke finger plugging changes this fact.

Explain to us how you train to stop contact injuries. Tapscott is the only player on our list with a soft tissue injury. I'd say the medical staff are doing very well.

I'm sorry, but they are not all contact injuries. They may be impact injuries, but they are not contact.

We are all theorising, and my point is that we should have it reviewed.

So basically you are disputing that we have had a bad run with injury? You are going to sit there and debate me on that? You KNOW that we have, that is what this thread is about – seriously what is wrong with some people on here?

I have no more informed background than you but I look at the facts and say it can’t possibly be bad luck only because to believe that would be imbecilic, simple as that

When you also factor in the concept that our footy department expenditure is half some other clubs then maybe you can see the forest for the trees

there is a thing called recovery, too

Who's an angry little man?!

I know about last year's because I have spoken to a number of people at the club who admit it. There were some problems last year with trainign surfaces, the recovery time lost in transit between Casey and our other facilities prolonged injuries, and a number of other things.

The rumour about Scully, which I absolutely do not know to be fact, which is why I called it a rumour, is that he believes (on his own med advice) that we didn't appropriately manage his pre-existing injury.

Again, that's why I think an external review would be very useful.

If our inordinate injury list is simply down to bad luck, then we have to be one of the most unluckiest organisations going around at the minute. There may be one remedy............ to coin a cliche; the harder you work, the luckier you get. Again, it may be simply coincidence, but have you ever noticed how teams whose form quickly diminishes, a subsequent raft of injuries ensues?

The club has already flagged a mid-season review of all sections of the club. Whether coincidence or not, injury and player welfare management will almost certainly be a part of that review and so it should be.

A few years ago one of the clubs, perhaps someone else remembers which one, held an independent inquiry into their injuries to see whether and where there might be things they could do better.

With our injuries over the past few years, especially this year, I really think the club owes it to itself and the members to have an expert examine and provide a report to the club on the injuries we have sustained. I would suggest they should be looking at the cause of each of the injuries, and whether they were avoidable.

It seems to me from speaking to some people in the know that a large number of our injuries may be related to load/yield management, and therefore potentially there are factors that are avoidable that are contributing to some injuries. I don't believe in coincidences, and really, there have been too many stress and hamstring type injuries.

I would also like to know whether the drive to and from Casey, surface at our training venues or any other controllable factors may be contributing.

Just my 2c.

Take your 2 cents back..... ridiculous post.

While perhaps it could have been worded better, it is not a "ridiculous" post.

Well if you have a look at the types of injuries we have they have mostly been caused by collisions. They are not soft tissue injuries which can be caused by overuse and training loads, recovery times etc etc. It is clearly just sheer bad luck.Up until the Adelaide game we had practically no injuries. We need to focus on our game plan, structures, training and how hard we work on the field rather than this. Once again we are doing what is so typical of this club - looking for excuses.

As I said, the club will have its mid-season review and injury/player welfare management will be part of that review. What is ridiculous about that?

IT IS AN EXCUSE!

FCS what qualifies as an excuse if having more than half your side out doesn't? We have key players picked out all over the ground and blokes that clearly should not be out there, obviously we are not functioning as we should, any side in the comp would be the same

The question this thread poses is whether there is a tangible reason this keeps happening to us

correct. the word I was after was impact rather than contact.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
