Grrrrrrrrrrr... we won 16 games that year, but still somehow managed to finish 4th at the end of the home and away season and beat top of the ladder Essendon twice and beat third placed West Coast twice including in Perth and beat 5th place Hawthorn once (but consecutively in round 22 and the elimination final).

It's the Black Cloud, I tell ya.

1987, 1990, 1998. All years we very well should have won the flag. Adelaide winning in 1998 makes me want to punch a wall every time I think about it.

In fact I for one think the footy was so much more enjoyable in those days. No dominant systems, no flooding. Just notice how few scrums there were. One on one stuff that depended on individual skill and initiative. Even the umpires were so much better than the unthinking regimented present day umpires.

It was a great season indeed BUT how did we lose to North Melbourne by 127 pts at the'G"? In an earlier round we had beaten them by 57 points also at the 'G'. My memory bank has conveniently erased memories of our huge loss. Did we have a large injury list or what? Anyone care to refresh my memory. One thing for sure, that thrashing killed our % and precluded us from finishing any higher than 4th.

No we had a strong side in. Final score was NM 31.14 200 to Melb 10.13.73. Our leading goal kicker was Full Back Danny Hughes with 2!! Horse Longmire kicked 14 goals for North. Before that game our percentage was 119.3%. After it was 106.9%.

We finished equal on points with Collingwood and WCE (64) but our percentages were Coll 130.2; WCE 118.4 and Melb 113.2. No doubt that loss cost us the double chance. We had beaten Hawthorn (twice including the EF), Essendon (twice) and WCE (twice but not in the semi).

Thanks for that info 'Warren Dean' Even a 5 goal loss and our percentage would have been still ok. Oh well, we will have to get over it 21 years later!
